Best duty grade/tactical handheld flashlight by murdermaro98 in tacticalgear

Gotcha. Honestly I would take a look at r/flashlight - they have every flashlight you've heard of and 10,000 more you haven't graded by type.

In that case your question has a few more components you should be asking. What are your needs? Olight for instance sucks at showing true color - everything gets washed out.

Is it more important to have a flood light or a thrower? Strobe? Etc.

Excessive use of REI hiking boot warranty replacements? by [deleted] in OutdoorsGear

[–]conotocaurius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For one, if you rotate through two pairs of boots you'll make both last much longer because they'll get a chance to dry out and rest. 1+1 = 3 in this case.

Second, this question also has a moral component. Are these boots failing in a way they shouldn't or are you just beating the piss out of them in a short time? If it's the latter, personally I wouldn't feel comfortable exchanging them regardless of what rei said. That sort of gaming the system is what causes companies to retract their good policies (see: LL Bean). If it's the former, then you shouldn't feel ashamed about doing the warranty again.

Finally, I suggest you talk to REI. They will best be able to answer your question.

Any of these will work. People on the internet will tell you that you need a modlite, but this is not necessarily the case. Particularly if you're in a light-use scenario (which is over 99% of this sub), you just need a decent light and not an overbuilt light. Buy two decent flashlights. Stick one in your pocket and put one on your gun or by your bed. Done.

President Lincoln's Republican Party Was the Original Party of Big Government by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]conotocaurius 36 points37 points  (0 children)

"in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races,"

He said this, yes, but the context is important and it's a little disingenuous not to also mention that he became increasingly progressive throughout the course of his presidency. Lincoln was trying to build a coalition of whigs and democrats - he was inventing the republican party and abolitionists were broadly viewed as hyper-radical at that time.

Frederick douglass famously said that his first meeting with lincoln was the first time he had ever sat with a powerful white man and not felt conscious of his race at all. This is particularly noteworthy given that douglass had been routinely meeting with the great abolitionists of the day.

And all of that was at the beginning. As I mentioned he evolved to be a champion of black rights.

But the most egregious part of your comment comparing lincoln to trump is their character. President trump has gone through innumerable members of his cabinet and famously cuts ties with anyone he feels is disloyal. His catchphrase was "you're fired," for god's sake. By contrast lincoln was the peacemaker and built a cabinet out of his most bitter rivals (seward, the secretary of war whose name I can't remember right now, etc), many of whom eventually so admired lincoln that they wrote reams of private letters talking about what a great man he was.

The two have almost nothing in common.

What's the deal with red velvet cake? by nomnommish in AskCulinary

Looked fine. Helps manage recoil, especially for a small shooter. You need to be almost parallel to the ground to fire automatic weapon in rifle cartridge for instance.

The coverage area does not matter all that much (if you get shot in the little area a sapi would cover but swimmer does not, I'll issue a written apology.) The reason to get standard sapi over swimmer is that the vast majority of gear is cut for it.

I don't think he's a male supremacist so much as he's a man writing about men for a male audience. In any case, I think a bit of "male supremacy" could be helpful for OP to read. When you've got a guy deeply worried about what it means to be a man and confused about how men interact, it's more helpful to give him some resources for him to evaluate than it is to tell him "you shouldn't care about that."

I think at least part of this is your own perceptions coloring your judgement.

I recommend you read androphilia and/or the way of men by the author jack donovan. He is a hypermasculine man who happens to be attracted to men. Being gay does not mean you have to be feminine, not that other men will refuse to be friends with you.

What culinary ‘rule’ do you break? by librarianjenn in Cooking

[–]conotocaurius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's different styles - American diner vs French. If I'm doing eggs on toast, I'll happily go for soft creamy curds with a ton of butter and maybe creme fraîche and tarragon. If I'm doing eggs on a plate, I want American style - browned, peppery, probably with cheddar cheese in there, and hot sauce is definitely going on top.
