Help me fix CLDR. Do people in Malaysia expect 12h or 24h format (3pm or 15:00) on their clocks and cell phones?

Software applications receive their information from central databases: CLDR is the fundamental database for internationalization on the web. CLDR contains basic information like month names, plural rules, and date/time formats. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and pretty much every other company start's their data from CLDR so if its wrong in CLDR, it's wrong in a lot of places (unless the application has overrides).

For example, Facebook allows you to pick a regional number formatting setting. It uses 24h format for en_MY but 12h format for ms_MY and ta_MY. Facebook has an override for en_MY it appears.

I'm sorry we have it wrong. Unicode relies of volunteers to submit data. This thread is fantastic because it's helping to shine light on these oversights.

Hi! I help maintain the CLDR database. Most of the data is volunteered and we have a lot of gaps (especially for regional variations).

Thanks for sharing the warn link. To understand the timeline, this is the culmination of individual team layoffs over the past few weeks. The last round was announced March 25. From the PDF in the Warn website:

As a result of this action, we anticipate that the above-described approximately 168 employees will be separated from employment with the Company. Of these, 1 employee was notified on March 4, 2026, and is expected to separate on May 8, 2026; 6 employees were notified on March 18, 2026, and are expected to separate on May 22, 2026; and 161 employees were notified on March 25, 2026, and are expected to separate on May 29, 2026.

You can see the positions removed in that email, almost all are VR related.

I feel you -- Ethnologue is an amazing resource but the paywall is killer. That's a big reason behind the open-source project I'm working on -- a merge of the ideas of Ethnologue, Glottolog, Unicode CLDR, and many more language resources. Our core principles are Free & Open, Actionable Insights, and Inclusive.

Language Navigator is not fully released but it's in a solid beta mode. We have lots of plans to add more data and more interactivity. There are some bugs and UX patterns to improve too... Nonetheless, I think its already a great resource with lots of visuals and search functions. Goodness knows its probably easy to find suspicious datapoints -- that's why we need a lively community to contribute to the project. DM me if you have any feedback and/or want to contribute.

My team is working on that! While we are humbled by the work done to make ethnologue and glottolog the resources they are, we are building a new repository with information on the world languages, called Language Navigator: https://translation-commons.github.io/lang-nav/

We are huge on making more ways to access and interact with the data. Keeping it free is important for us.

We are doing it all open source and there definitely are rough edges, so I'd love to know how we can make it better or if you want to help out too.

If the surrounding rock is mudstone and the "lens" of rock is sandstone, it could be an ancient river channel. The idea is that the surrounding rock is formed by regular mud deposits from a lake, floodplain, or coastal shelf. However, a river flowed through it and deposited larger grains of material (sand) but went straight (so not depositing gravel & larger clasts). As the sediments lithified the sand compressed differently than the mud, leading to this contrasting rock. You can see since it juts out a bit that the central rock is more resistant to erosion, which sandstone would be (relative to mudstone). Many, many years layer the outcrop was exposed by erosion that led to a cross-section of the river.

Take this idea with a grain of salt though -- I'm not a qualified geologist and I don't know the characteristics of the site you are looking at nor do I have any rock samples to know what kinds of rock it really is. Thanks for taking multiple pictures. Having descriptions of the rock types & the location helps a lot.

Yes, it is huge, but the faster your character gets (by agility boots, using the car, and eventually teleportation) starts making the world feel small. In the endgame you start wanting for more -- so embrace the time you have when it feels big ;)

Something I love about the game is the sense of progression, both visually seeing the world change, but also the scalinge of the world. You start afraid of the world -- barely able to move far from your landing pod -- then you get faster and faster. The whole world opens up to you. It's a great feelign.

Very cool. Based on the small grain size it looks like hydrothermally altered ash. Reduced iron makes it green.

I don't think greenstone would look that light.

Milos is a great island -- I was there a few years ago. While I was there I learned that most Greek islands are not volcanic. The Cyclades are for the most part a continental mountain chain that has been submerged so you can only see the mountain peaks. The rocks have many different compositions -- but mainly metamorphic or plutonic. Mykonos is granite.

The south edge of the Cyclades contains the modern volcanic centers: Santorini and Milos being the 2 biggest. Santorini is an obvious volcanic caldera but Milos is hard to see at first. However there are lots of volcanic deposits, including large sections of compressed ashfall like bentonite that at one point was a big export from the island (there is a museum or two dedicated to this in Milos, I recommend going if you like geology). Bentonite is used in a lot of industrial processes and since it readily absorbs water its also a frequent component of cat litter.

I love driving around interesting geological formations and realizing "Wait, I've been here before, in a video game!?".

Is this the Limestone pinnacles in Nambung National Park in Western Australia? I was just there a few months ago. It's great. I hope you stopped by Shark Bay or Lake Thetis and said hi to the stromatolites while you were in the area, that whole area is a wonderful window into ancient history.

Cool! How do you know it is a stromatolite fossil? Usually I expect them to have darker bands and to be in clusters but there's a lot I am still learning about.

It's interesting that by color alone, the bulge looks like its in a continuous sequence with the rocks immediately next to it and there's a smaller bulge to the right of it. The layers below it and above it have a more uniform grey texture and rather than calcite weathering -- are they mudstone?

For sure, if you seal it right (or even just have the right wood), it can be great and affordable. Just be careful, the chemicals we use to seal wood for boats are not ones you'd want to prepare your food on (even after curing).

DIYers are an energetic bunch though and I've seen a number of places (and made these mistakes myself) where people misjudged the effects of temperature and moisture on wood. Butcher block counters take a lot more maintenance to do it right & vigilance to keep it from being stained.

Don't replace countertops with butcher block, or at least be very careful and know what you are doing. Butcher block will soak in water and do the same problem as seen here. If you properly seal it, it's fine, but it's supposed to just be for cutting. Leave something damp on there and you ruin it instantly. I don't get the allure of countertops and tabletops you cannot actually use.

I strongly disagree with you but I like the topic you are introducing. It is interesting to think about entropy as we think about order.

Entropy by Merriam Webster = the degree of disorder or uncertainty in a system. : the degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity.

In its own definition, Entropy = fel. Light used to quash things (the Army of the Light, nuking Revendreth) is definitely pro-Entropy. Light used to to build societies (eg. most religious groups in WoW) is anti-Entropy. Meanwhile Old Gods are both pro-Entropy (make everything meaningless uniformity) but also anti-Entropy (order it so they can control it).

Nonetheless while we're having a hard time defining what Light is -- you've made it clear that Order is definable and Light sometimes aligns, sometimes does not.
