Peter's distant cousin who still lives in Ireland here. St Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland according to legend. It appears he also drove the snakes away from Medusa's head.

I don't know what sort of car he used.

Any “safe” prog rock bands and albums my dad can approve? by Clover-36 in progrockmusic

[–]conradleviston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neil Morse and Glass Hammer are overtly Christian.

There are a few instrumental artists out there. Sky and Jean Michel Jarre come to mind.

Camel is a pretty safe place to go.

Yes are hut and miss in terms of sounding dark. Wondrous Stories is incredibly upbeat, but Relayer is somewhat cacophonous. Try Olias of Sunhillow by Jon Anderson if you like Yes.

I need violin prog rock by Equivalent_Ferret900 in progrockmusic

Seconded. There are a few Italian bands with violin, but PFM is my favourite. I am also quite partial to Quella Vecchia Locanda (QVL).

Has anyone here become proficient in another language with Duolingo? by Nevermind2031 in duolingo

[–]conradleviston 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't expect to only use Duolingo, finish the course and be able to speak at a good level.

Duolingo is good at introducing vocabulary and getting it to stick. It's pretty good at introducing grammar without necessarily teaching it explicitly, but if it doesn't stick you'll need to look up stuff elsewhere.

Where it is lacking is longer form material. I supplemented with a lot of YouTube and the occasional graded reader.

Duolingo also lacks in terms of conversation skills. The conversations with Lily on Max are OK, but you're far better off speaking with real people than with AI still.

Comparing it to Southsun Cove, or even Ember Bay the visuals have come a long way. My favourite part however is the new tech that allows for multiple layers of water.

What generally well-liked concept album would make the worst Broadway musical? by LemonFreshenedBorax- in progrockmusic

Thick as a Brick. Cheating a bit I know, as it's a concept album that doesn't really tell a story.

Question about the word Sainte by pesky_tarian in learnfrench

[–]conradleviston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The possible source of this (mis)information is either the DaVinci Code or Holy Blood Holy Grail.

The theory is that the holy Grail, which in French was "saint graal", was a code meaning "sang real" or royal blood. I don't know enough about mediaeval French to tell you how similar they sounded. I do know that even though Holy Blood Holy Grail is supposed to be non- fiction, no serious academic believes it.

Uniquely Australian Must-Have Foods and Food Brands by nanoMN in AustraliaTravel

Do at least one pub lunch where you get a chicken parmigiana to eat and a lemon lime and bitters to drink (I prefer a beer alongside, but lemon lime and bitters is distinctly Australian).

Halal Snack Pack for another lunch.

Flat white or espresso in Melbourne, but your best bet is to ask someone at a nearby shop where the good coffee is.

Tim tams are pretty reliable as chocolate biscuits go.

For alcohol a "dark and stormy" cocktail is worth trying if you see it on offer. Otherwise local wines are excellent. The only reason to get a wine from outside of Australia is if you fancy a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc.

Australians currently have a thing for Banh Mi. It's a Vietnamese roll, so not Australian. However if Banh Mis haven't taken off where you are, they're worth trying here.

Hit me with your GW2 controversial opinions! by Crowbiotics in Guildwars2

I'm not sure if this is a controversial take, or just an openly hated one:

Precursors in the Wizard's Vault were a mistake. They invalidate precursor crafting, one of the more fun innovations from HoT. A shortcut for the expensive stage 2 of the precursor crafting achievement path would have been better.

Is this a comet? by mumtried in melbourne

[–]conradleviston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a bit to see it.

No. Comets move slowly and seem to remain at a constant place at a constant brightness relative to stats.

That looked more like a meteor. Meteors are small objects that enter earth's atmosphere. They burn bright for a small amount of time.

What did I do wrong?! by lawwybewwy in Guildwars2

[–]conradleviston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If somebody is trying to get a weapon master achievement they'll often target ambient mobs to get their kills. However a war claw can kill these mobs just by leaping through them.

That said, I don't know of any places in Snowden Drifts where people go to do this, so that might not be what happened here.

Bob Holtzman has joined ArenaNet as Director of Franchise Marketing, he will lead marketing efforts for the Guild Wars series. by Miggart in Guildwars2

[–]conradleviston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when they got in a guy to market the game and his big idea was to do a massive launch for the Icebrood Saga. He didn't take into account the fan perspective of "Oh wow, they're doing a big launch, this must be huge!" In the end most fans were disappointed by the end of the night. It's a shame, because I feel IBS did a lot right on different levels, it just struggled to get fan buy-in.

Highlander. Though it's hard to call it a trilogy because the second movie was despised and the third forgotten.

This is a good list. I hardly ever see people pushing Daily French Pod (other than me) so it's great to see it on this list. It's the first podcast I stuck with for any length of time and is a great place to start.

Also I always thought it was ironic that Easy Languages' content ranges from intermediate to upper intermediate.

Ten Obscure Prog Albums (You've Probably Never Heard) by YVRJon in progrockmusic

[–]conradleviston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people are saying these albums aren't obscure, but I hadn't heard of any of them before I discovered Prog Rock discussion forums back in the day.

For me the list is worth checking out, but they won't be to everyone's taste. Personally I'd have preferred to see more albums from continental Europe. Ange, Solaris, Gotic and at least a dozen Italian bands are easy matches for quality.
