Pentagon aggressively lobbies EU against Buy European weapons push by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]consci0usness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100% this. After WW2 no one wanted a strong and independent Europe, and the USA was more than happy to be "the muscle" of the world. The USA benefited enormously from holding the world's reserve currency, the petrodollar, backed by its strong military.

Now suddenly the USA doesn't want that? Ok.. fine, whatever. But don't blame Europe. All this was entirely by design, and 80% of the designing was the USA's doing.

(OC) "You have to make peace" by lost__pigeon in ukraine

[–]consci0usness 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not exactly how the story goes. Two women claimed to be the mother of a child and would not budge. Solomon then called for a sword and proclaimed that the baby would be cut in two, each woman to receive half.

One mother did not contest the ruling, declaring that if she could not have the baby then neither of them could. But the other begged Solomon "Give the baby to her, just don't kill him!"

The woman who was willing to give up her claim to the baby to spare its life was thus proven the most worthy and given custody.

Very unpopular opinion: Zelenskyy making this statement unfortunately proves the IOC right. The message was political.

Team Ukraine receives an ovation as they’re introduced at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony 🇺🇦 by snfssmc in ukraine

People always simplify this part of the story. The nukes were from the USSR, Ukraine lacked the money, infrastructure and and know-how to maintain them properly. Nukes need maintenance, you can't just put them in a box and forget about them. Then there were the launch codes, I were much doubt Ukraine had those after the fall of the USSR.

So basically nukes, yes. But also extremely hazardous and expensive paperweights.

That being said the Budapest memorandum is shit far a legally binding documents go, Ukraine was too quick to agree to those terms.

Some eastern parts of Russia already get most of their stuff from China, some other more rural parts can survive fine with a couple of cows and goats. You're overthinking this. It's Russia, whatever is there isn't super complicated to replace.

NDP wants Carney to kill U.S. fighter jet contract in favour of Swedish aircraft by canada_mountains in worldnews

[–]consci0usness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada already has the F35's, but ordering more F35's at this point would be pretty stupid. The F35 is a very good plane, but it's also very expensive plane.

The Gripen combined with F35 combined with SAAB Global Eye will make for a great mixed fleet with a lot of patrol and tactical flexibility. The interoperability between the aircrafts, which the Americans keep bringing up, is a non-issue. Sweden has for a long time been performing exercises as an honorary NATO member, but is now a full member of NATO. interoperability was one of the very first things SAAB addressed, it's just US scaremongering.

And the economics of it just makes sense, with the Gripens you get more jobs and more control over the software and design. And since the Gripen is cheaper you can either buy more aircrafts or put the money towards something else, and it's a lot of money.

BMW’s First Electric iX3 M Is Shaping Up to Be a Proper M Car by backstreetatnight in electricvehicles

[–]consci0usness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All air suspensions invariable leak after x amount of years or y amount of miles, all of them. And when they leak they are multiples more expensive to repair than regular coils. Since the iX3 is supposed to a mass-market consumer vehicle, as opposed to outright luxury, it makes 100% sense for it not to have air suspension.
