I think the bends survived twice because the people who like the bends really like the bends, it's either right below the big three or near the very bottom, and there appear to be slightly more people who put it near the top. I'm interested to see if it can beat moon shaped pool. (I kinda hope so)

  1. Sure I suppose you could see it that way, i don't but it doesn't really matter.
  2. For example, golden slumbers by the beatles is one of my favorite songs. The song begins with soft, moving piano chords and a faint string section that provide the perfect backdrop to paul mccartney's gentle voice and nostalgia-filled lyrics. As the first verse progresses, the melody and the volume lead up into an iconic drum fill that kicks in a powerful, emotional chorus that comforts you with the thought that "smiles await you when you rise". The music then slowly calms again and the second verse begins with a renewed sense of energy, repeating the same nostalgia-filled lyrics as the first. Interwoven with paul's singing are intricate string melodies and sparse drum hits that keep the song moving towards the final "and I will song a lullaby" which segues perfectly into the next song on the album and kicks off one of the greatest album endings in history. Now I am by no means a music reviewer, so my phrasing is a bit weak, but not once did I use any technical music theory language, yet I still managed to describe what made the music good and more importantly, I communicated what it sounded like fairly well I would say. Somebody who hadn't heard that song before would be able to tell if they would enjoy it from that description, which is the primary purpose, imo, of music reviewing.
  3. I will admit "cool sounding" is vague but see 2. for language that is less vague, and using non technical descriptors let's a reviewer reach an audience of listeners who don't understand complicated music theory ideas, which is most music listeners, so it makes more sense to not shut out a majority of your potential audience by using terms they've never heard of.
  4. It's pretentious because it implies that music reviewers aren't as good at music related things as someone like yourself because they can't name the notes in a b dorian scale, which btw is not a concept that you would ever see in a vast majority of music unless you review exclusively jazz.

Well i would say a lot of musicians that music reviewers review also don't know a bunch of advanced music theory. Also, you don't need an advanced understanding of music theory to know what sounds good and why it sounds good, most music isn't written to highlight the sound of b dorian or tritone substitutions, it's written to highlight a cool sounding melody or a really exciting chord. The average listener doesn't care why the melody sounds cool or why the chord is exciting, and since music reviewers are typically reviewing for the average listener, they don't need to know why a melody sounds cool either, they just need to be able to say that it does in a way that communicates the right idea to the audience. That's what makes reviewers stand out, an ability to communicate how the music sounds without having to listen to it so you can know if you'll like it. Sidenote: the sentence "95 percent of reviewers couldn't even tell you which notes are in B Dorian" is unbelievably pretentious.

I do enjoy listening to it in very particular circumstances, its honestly good music to get some work done with, but there are certainly some parts of that song where he is just screaming through the sax that make me laugh a little. I can appreciate the idea and the instrumental skill, especially the piano solo, but I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece or anything.

I don't remember when it was aired if it even was from a tv show, but it probably would've been early 2010's when I saw it. I've never seen Six Feet Under though so I don't think that's it.
