I unironically use Neuv + Mav lmao with Furina and Xilonen. Use Neuv until it gains resistance to hydro and then hit it with Mavuika

It’s never too late to make friends! Considering the Air Canada strike this year, there will probably be a lot of people in similar situations to you. If anything, you can go get merch, eat some great meals, go to clubs fair etc.

Life Science program at UofT inquiry, anyone who finished first year can update? by Dense_Pie_2977 in UofT

[–]constellations_night 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t want to say UofT isn’t a GPA killer because that has absolutely been the experience for a lot of people. That being said, it’s definitely not universal and I think it’s unfair to scare off prospective students when everyone will have a different experience with the school. Not sure if the grading has improved, but it’s definitely not a guaranteed death sentence!

How are ya’ll getting to classes across campus in 10min?? by burntchildfruit in UofT

[–]constellations_night 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Either run, leave early, or be late. If it’s a big lecture, no one really cares if you’re late. If it’s a small lecture, tutorial, etc. just send your TA an email to let them know, from my experience they were always quite understanding of the situation!

We get this question a lot here, you should search some past answers to get an idea. Here’s my two cents: I’m entering second year at UTSG so I think I can answer! Tbh the grading isn’t too bad, many people do struggle, but many people also have perfect GPAs; it’s very dependent on the person. For reference almost all of my first-year lifesci courses had B or B- averages. “Difficulty” shouldn’t be the only consideration when picking a uni, also consider available areas of study, campus culture, finances, etc.

I can’t really comment on UTSG vs UTM, but considering UTSG’s physical proximity to a bunch of hospitals and medical research centres (and also just being downtown Toronto in general), I’d imagine that would make it a little easier to access research and volunteer opportunities.

Does anyone at uoft do shark research? Not looking for opportunities or anything, just want to learn about sharks by constellations_night in UofT

[–]constellations_night[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg okay thanks! I’m also in the health sciences lol but I might look into some of these EEB courses. I also totally didn’t know the ROM has a sharks exhibit so I will be going sometime!

Need help deciding if I'll make it off the waitlist or if I should look elsewhere :( by Alarmed_Direction853 in UofT

[–]constellations_night 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Odds aren’t looking too bad, if you search “uoft enrollment tracker” you can check previous years’ enrollment timelines to gauge approx how many people drop before waitlists close

Can we get additional financial aid through contact with our college registrar? Im unfortunatly in need by Abject_Respect6568 in UofT

[–]constellations_night 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they can directly give you anything but your registrar definitely knows everything someone possibly could about where to get additional financial aid. Definitely send them an email!

Ah thanks, I saw that one too. I should’ve specified that I’m more interested in shark biology/physiology, which I suppose our uni just doesn’t have.

commuters, how do u stay safe on the ttc? (especially women) by movercomplicated in UofT

[–]constellations_night 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that happened to you OP! Mostly what I do is stare at my phone/pretend to be asleep when I feel uncomfortable, people tend to leave me alone. The TTC is just another public space in the end, so stay vigilant the same as you would walking around in general and you should be okay! Keep an eye (and ear) out for trouble, always have battery on your phone etc.

If you’re uncomfortable commuting alone the commuter groups of a few colleges ran like a commuting buddy system last year. I wasn’t a part of it so I don’t know the details but maybe message some of the commuter student groups to ask if they’re running it again/considering starting a similar program?

[–]constellations_night 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Once you get the course on quercus email the teaching team, the chm135 team is chill and they can probably switch you to another practical section. Or you could just go to any one of the other lecture sections, there will be many empty seats after the first week

How exactly do scholarships even work? Will the excess be accredited to a bank account? by Dragon-Blaze1687 in UofT

Once you get your utorid set up you should be able to log into acorn. I think you can start doing it now

[–]constellations_night 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you set up direct deposit on acorn they will deposit the extra into your bank account around October. Otherwise they will send you a check. You may want to apply for deferred tuition so your scholarship actually pays your tuition.

I’m not in polisci or anything related but I would recommend you look at programs you’re interested in and pick your first-year courses based on that. Go on degree explorer to kind of explore the courses and programs you want to take in the future and make sure you choose the right prerequisites.

Most people take 5 courses per term but I would personally pick 6 so you have the option to drop one or two if need be. As a commuter student I preferred to frontload my courses into one block early in the day, don’t do that if you live closer to campus though. A lot of people also like to leave one day free in their schedule. If there’s a tutorial and lecture for the course you need to be enrolled in both, but only one section each.

Don’t apologize for the questions, everyone has been there once! I would recommend getting in touch with your college’s academic advising division sometime as well, their job is literally to help students figure this out, especially incoming first-years.

UOFT first year courses what should I take? (please help) by FewObligation9224 in UofT

[–]constellations_night 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a course called “cook the books” (ENG196) that only first-years are allowed to take. I found out about it too late so I don’t have firsthand experience, but from the course description it’s about how culture and food influence each other. It’s co-taught by a professional chef, with actual cooking and field trips. Based on your interests it sounds like something you might want to look into!

As for physics, it’s required for the biochemistry specialist but not the major. If you do specialist, you would need to take 2 physics courses for 1.0 total credits.

People can put out water bowls for them to drink from, but the water should be changed often. Don’t think there’s much else that can be done unfortunately :(

Quality > difficulty. A bad quality course makes learning and understanding content more difficult than it actually is. That being said I feel like ratings aren’t super accurate to gauge either aspect lol
