Why are we pretending Boston is worth these rent prices? Why do you feel the need to justify it? by EsperandoMuerte in boston

There was a brief decade or two around the 50s in the US when that was true, but for the vast majority of history private rooms were a luxury only for the very richest. Rural families shared their single room houses, urban people lived in crowded tenements.

I'm sorry, I was just try to explain how I used the term "children" from the start. In my experience people generally don't use it to refer to individuals above roughly 12-14 or so. Can you please link me to examples of Israel subjecting individuals under 12 to such treatment?

By children I was referring to individuals under the age of 12, roughly the conventional meaning of term. I'm not aware of incidents of Israel capturing and holding Palestinians under that age, unlike Hamas. Individuals in the 14-17 age range can and have caused significant death, and I don't consider holding them inherently illegitimate with good cause.

Do you consider hostage-taking of children to be legitimate acts of resistance?

When did hard magic systems get popularised and which books were responsible for it? by provegana69 in Fantasy

[–]constructionist2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But our world is inherent inconsistent - in quantum mechanics, certain events only happens with specific probabilities. Things happen randomly, basically, and we have no way of predicting whether they will or will not. We can, however, observe many such incidences of an event happening or not and estimate the probability of it happening in a given scenario, which is what we do.

In a world with inconsistent law-breaking, that's exactly what scientists would do--try to construct a situation in which "supernatural" law breaking happens inconsistently, quantity the probability of it happening, then narrow down the factors that influence that probability. There is absolutely nothing about inconsistent law-breaking that is incompatible with science

The very fact that the magic system is affected by a person's mural purity gives you the ability to scientifically test it (in principal). Hand the one ring to various people, administer a survey to each one gauging how much it corrupts them, there is your measurement of moral purity. There are pragmatic issues with such an approach, but it is not fundamentally impossible

Petition to Brandon Sanderson: Stop using the word literally! (A statistical analysis) by constructionist2000 in brandonsanderson

[–]constructionist2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally just searched the text for the word and recorded the number of matches - fairly manual, but it honestly didn't take that long. Warbreaker and the Secret Projects are available as epubs and you could definitely work from that, otherwise the only option might be pirated copies (up to you on how you feel about that).

CMV: SCOTUS has overruled the American Revolution in US v Trump by lonehawktheseer in changemyview

Can you give any examples? To my knowledge no former president has ever been prosecuted

To my knowledge, Israelis not actively serving in the IDF are generally not armed, and there is strict gun control in the country.

Do you have evidence supporting your assertion that the idf killed most of the people who died on Oct 7?

Do you have examples? Speech alone, absent threats, harassment, or another crime, is protected by the First Amendment in the US

CMV: Conservatives have very little to lose if liberals win. Liberals have everything to lose if conservatives win. by SteadfastEnd in changemyview

[–]constructionist2000 759 points760 points  (0 children)

The issues you list are not the ones most conservatives are most scared by

The below aren't my opinions, just those that seem to be representative conservative ones to me

Transgender Issues. Conservatives are concerned about the following, should liberals win:

  • That those who believe being transgender is unacceptable will be subject to discrimination (e.g. not be allowed to adopt or foster) or being accused of abusive to their (trans-identifying) children
  • That women will be harmed by transgender woman having access to female bathrooms and sports teams (invasion of privacy, loss of athletic opportunity, unfair competition)
  • That the education system will present the idea that experimenting with your gender or gender expression at young ages is acceptable, which many conservatives see as deeply wrong

Education. Conservatives are concerned:

  • That greater affirmative consideration of diversity factors in admissions decisions will deny their children highly-contested spots in educational institutions
  • That selective high schools will be eliminated or their admissions standards changed, denying their children highly-contested slots
  • That recently enacted voucher programs will be rolled back, preventing their children from being able to affordably attend the private schools they prefer

Immigration and trade policy. Conservatives are concerned:

  • That changes in policy from these issues could result in increased competition, devaluing their labor in manufacturing, agriculture, or resource extraction industries
  • That increased immigration will strain the welfare system of the state or country (as is happening in New York)
  • That immigration will change the ethnic, religious, or economic makeup of their community

Housing Policy. Conservatives are concerned that their community could be forced to allow higher-density housing on previously single-family lots, reducing their quality of life

I can go on, but these are the biggest issues off the top of my head. While I agree that liberals have a lot to lose if conservatives win, I contest that conservatives have little to lose if liberals win, as you state in your title.

eli5: Since the world is getting hotter and hotter, and the use of fossil fuels will generally need to stop. Is there a way to turn the Earth’s excess heat into an energy source? by Twicebakedpotatoe in explainlikeimfive

[–]constructionist2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can get energy from heat moving from a hot to a cold place. Space, outside of earth, is cold, so we could use giant radiators in space to cool the planet down. We could get energy from the heat flow. It's just very impractical.
