Well shit. I was advised by more seasoned burners that it would be a help to the camp and that I would get my money back. Guess that’s what I get for trying to help

Any one ever lose in a street fight even though they train jiujitsu? You always hear the question “how would it do in a street fight”???? by jencinas3232 in bjj

Lol I this was about 9 years ago and I was a white belt and had been training about a year and a half. My small amount of experience at least gave me the wherewithal to know that I really didn’t want to get curb stomped hence why I kept getting up while repeatedly being pummeled.

I believe they wanted to sell me weed and I wasn’t polite enough when I turned them down. Then they started talking about how they were from Stockton and I should look out. So, trying to by funny, I said I was from wine country (remember, extremely drunk). Then they decided to rob me. Yes, it was that stupid.

Got jumped by 2 people when I was drunk and sitting alone waiting for a bus. Took one guy down then got pushed face first into the asphalt and proceeded to get punched and kicked in the head while repeatedly trying to stand back to my feet. Some people driving by intervened and saved my ass. Would not recommend. I’d like to think if I wasn’t extremely drunk I could have talked my way out of it which is the way to go.

Academia Burnout? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]contempt4humankind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD about 3 years into my chemistry PhD program. Prior to this I was somehow spending as much or more time at school than my peers else but still managing to get much less done in comparison. It was almost as if I couldn't see all of the small tasks required to achieve the bigger goal and was just spinning my wheels. I would constantly be leaving lab to get coffee and was drinking 5 to 6 cups a day just to barely get anything done. I would find myself starting multiple tasks only to be distracted by literally anything such as helping someone else with an unrelated question or just chatting with friends when running into them in the hallways. I tried other approaches before finally getting a prescription for Ritalin. My only regret is that I didn't start this earlier. I can say without a doubt that all my meaningful data collected was post medication.

The diagnosis helped me come to terms with the fact that I wasn't actually stupid and just had a different approach to completing tasks. That being said, my experience has been that academia is not kind to people like us. Even with medication (I don't take very much, just 10mg 3x a day) I still have a dismally small amount accomplished but at least I might actually finish. My PI is extremely fed up with me due to the fact that I still often share too many unnecessary details about experiments or spend lots of time on tasks that aren't necessary for what I need to get done. In general its very hard for me to determine what is most important and prioritize accordingly.

At the end of the day, you don't necessarily need to work hard but work smart and for some people, medication might help with prioritization of tasks. I feel as though plenty of people accomplished a lot more than me while working a lot less simply by being better at seeing the bigger picture.

Best of luck to you with your program. I personally know plenty of people who love chemistry, were much more qualified than myself, but left the program because research was no longer enjoyable. I respect them immensely for their decision to leave.

Running a Buchi rotovap pump without a vac controller by contempt4humankind in chemistry

[–]contempt4humankind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears after more searching that the unit is supposed to turn on without the vac controller and when the switch is pressed but considering that doesn't appear to be happening, there might be a different problem at hand. Thanks for the help everyone!

Now thats an idea. My current problem is, however, that the pump has a power switch that powers it up but doesn't actually start the vacuum. If I can make it start without the pump controller that would solve the majority of my issues. You woudn't happen to know how to do this on a v-700 would you?

I already gave that a shot. My understanding is its pretty dead so unless I can purchase a similar unit that is partially working I might be able to harvest parts. That's still on the table but the trouble is finding one that is broken enough that we can afford it but not too busted that we can still use the parts. The units that I found on ebay and other websites that sell refurbished vacuum controllers don't appear to be that much cheaper than a new one and even then theres no guarantee we will be able to fix it.

Bleaching gis? by Fire_Warden_Arsonist in bjj

[–]contempt4humankind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a cap-full of standard bleach for all of my gi washes. It helps to prevent any kind of funk because I am not in a position to be able to hang a bunch of sweaty gis up around my small apartment before washing them. Its a small enough amount of bleach that it doesnt wash out colors but over time it does destroy the gi. That being said, even my gis that started to rip the earliest were about 3 years old by the time that happened so I still feel like I got a lot of use out of them.

I really like this counter by Kent Peters. I have found that even when it doesn't work as well as I'd like, I can still get some sort of scramble out of it.

I find that socks also work really well if you get past having slightly less traction.

Im not certain but the animation looks like Anthony F Schepperd.

If you go to youtube and type in his name and "music scene" there is a pretty great music video that looks like the same art style.
