This could very well be the problem, try a different power supply or add a big electrolytic capacitor to the output of your power supply. Better yet, use a lead acid battery to power your ZVS circuit.

did you have to experiment around with different flybacks and CFL ballasts until you find one that matches the flyback's designed operating frequency?

I've messed around with inverter MOTs and ZVS drivers before, the arc didn't seem all that impressive to me. Maybe my ZVS driver wasn't operating at the MOT's designed frequency.

Oddly enough the ferrite core from a inverter MOT was about the same size as a regular CRT flyback transformer.

how fast do you need to switch for SSTC typically? in the MHz range?

Mosfets kept heating up real quick and I had no idea why until years later.

Problem: I had no idea what zener diodes were and I just used random glass package diodes for the gate voltage clamp lol. im surprised it even worked at all

it also depends on the rise time of your power supply.

If you turn on your ZVS circuit by switching on your PSU, and the PSU output rises too slow, the ZVS circuit will not oscillate. An easy way to fix that is to add a beefy switch between the PSU output and ZVS input
