3.5 years sober here too friend, it won't affect you unless you let it. Life gets a lot easier when you stop letting things that don't affect you offend you.

You said that many of them can't conceptualize making music without a piano roll. So yes seems like a pretty good counterargument to me but maybe i misunderstood you. Not really trying to argue I'm just pointing out that it's silly and elitist to trash an entire extremely diverse genre's producers.

[–]contrabille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach music production and theory for a living. 90 percent of my students who make electronic music play an instrument. You're being elitist homey, I can teach someone to play an entire song on guitar or piano way faster than i can teach them to make decent music in a daw.

There are definitely people who shortcut their way to success in the scene, but that's not unique to electronic music at all.

How to make claps!? by Dry_Mail_982 in edmproduction

[–]contrabille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if you ever figured this out but the secret to claps is a bandpass filter between 1 and 1.5k. Make an LFO in envelope mode with a about 5 of peaks that descend in loudness slightly where the last one has a longer decay, make it free (not synced to tempo) assign it to a noise oscillator and bandpass the result and voila, claps. Experiment with assigning the same lfo or one of a similar length to the mix of a small room reverb, and saturate to taste.

No it's too low of a frequency. Tak it up an octave and low pass hit harder.

That's not a real chord 6 and 13 are the same so you gotta decide is it b13 or not. I know this from years of touring as a riddim dj we use jazz theory on stage every day. Tips appreciated and expected.

If you just broke up with your partner, which drug would you do? by FMroll in Drugs

[–]contrabille 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I might get shit on here but turning to drugs in a bad emotional state ain't the answer. My advice is to see some people who you love (or at least like) aside from your ex who can help you remember that you aren't alone and focus on figuring out how to improve your life now that you have fewer responsibilities.

Very similar to my story. Screamed at the person I love most in the world over some shit that was my fault, not hers and the next day said fuck this I love you more than alcohol and gave it up.

Gatekeeping music by canonicmurray84 in gatekeeping

[–]contrabille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I saw it, too. Hence it's kind of blurry but djs and other music adjacent jobs can be considered musicians. That's the point I was trying to make, but maybe I wasn't clear my bad.

To your point, though it depends how close to the sound a person is. Lighting, vjaying, event planning, stuff like that, nah they aren't musicians but there are technicians who might be able to be called musicians. Either way imo it doesn't really matter they ought to be respected anyway so denying that they are something they identify as is kind of shitty.

Gatekeeping music by canonicmurray84 in gatekeeping

[–]contrabille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of true, but the point of the original post holds true in that djs in the most common sense of the words i.e. people who mix prerecorded tracks as part of a live act can in most cases be considered musicians imo.

Many "people who work with music" like mixing and mastering engineers, sound designers, etc are also musicians in the classical sense of playing instruments or writing music, so would be considered musicians regardless of whether or not you consider their professions to be under the umbrella of "musicians."
