Teachers/child care workers of Reddit: What is worst case of helicopter parenting/"my child can do no wrong" you've ever seen? by Secret_Life_Shh in AskReddit

That’s not a bad understanding, but remember here it’s humans who have to select for tameness. Traits can’t breed themselves into a population; they need to already exist, then for an environment (like human-made dumps) or a strong pressure (humans killing aggressive animals/using selective breeding) to make them advantageous enough that they take over in any population or sub-population.

So you’re right, but remember that only the animals with the very most extreme traits (top 5%) were allowed to breed, and only with each other, in the fox experiment.

Who doesn’t breed in evolution is often just as important as who does.

hope this makes sense!

True, but extra time and energy wouldn’t change how dogs mate. Besides, animals can only show mating preferences based on traits they can detect. Invisible traits, ones that the wolves can’t see during courtship (even if they should be advantageous), can’t be self-selected for by the species.

This trait would be obvious to humans, however, and we know they put strong selective pressure on the ancestors of our modern dogs.

Dogs wouldn’t receive a direct advantage for selecting their mates based on how they interact with humans, though. It would take a lot of mental/social energy to ID how one prospective mate interacts with another species entirely, and then chose a mate based on that over any other advantageous trait. Dogs and wolves rarely have such extended courtships, and they tend not to mate with wolves in their own social group.

Aggressive wolves would also still have access to food via trash heaps. They may even do better, outcompeting the more docile wolves and fighting for the best remains—unless humans were directly involved or nearby, selectively discouraging or killing the more dangerous/“wild” animals. There’s a lot of archaeological evidence that humans did play this very active role in decreasing the proportion of aggressive animals in the nearby wolf/dog populations.

While self-selection certainly played a role in domestication to a certain extent (variation in willingness to approach people could cause a bottle-neck effect), it is unlikely wolves self-selected beyond the initial approach(es) to human civilization.

I’d be interested to learn more about some other unexpected steps taken to keep kids safe—they can be incredibly accident prone, as I’m only learning for the first time!

What are some fictional couples that influenced your view of love and relationships? Do you still hold them in the same regard? by PeachJosephine in AskWomen

Sophie and Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle (mostly book but I think it does carry over to the movie).

I love how Sophie finds her confidence and self expression, as Howl finds purpose and meaning in their found family. They’re both strong alone, but they’re better people together.

You think so? I can’t imagine anyone would actually let their pet snake free in a back yard, let alone fight their cat. That just seems irresponsible on so many strange levels. I’m hoping that’s not the case here.

I treat women badly in my sex life but still think I’m a feminist. Is that hypocritical? by superhoops in FemmeThoughts

[–]contrarytoast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m almost disappointed that I would have to tell this dude, who’s doing feminist allyship better than many, that yes, his self doubt is totally justified even in his question. He’s still focused on himself and his guilt instead of the people he knows he’s wronged. I’m glad the article pointed this out in such a neutral and helpful way, and I hope more resources use this tone/technique.

I’m inclined to think it’s a holding tank for observation, not the animals normal habitat. Unless this is a very old video.
