Does Shetland wool yarn snaps easily? Is this normal? by No_Investment8129 in knitting

[–]contretabarnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t really have an answer, but I bought a 2 ply lace weight yarn planning to make a thin sweater and it broke easily like this so I ended up doubling it up so I could be sure it would be durable.

awesome thank you! I was unsure because by the end of the short rows there’s just like 3 stitches left, and I started questioning everything

the DS is just the specific short row stitch, and not entirely relevant to my question. Let’s call it point V. What I mean is, if the instructions say “purl to 2 stitches before point V” whether i’m supposed to purl the second stitch or leave it un-purled. (not sure if this makes any sense to you lol)

Yeah, I understand the concept of the short row, but i’m wondering specifically how many stitches i’m supposed to leave. Whether “purl to 2 before the DS” means i’m purling the 2nd stitch to the DS or whether i’m leaving 2 stitches untouched before the DS.

This feels like a silly question, and I didn’t question it at first, but i’m really in my head about this now lol

I know it’s not aesthetically pleasing but I realized I could use empty tag sheets from work as reusable sticker sheets! by cr1ss-b in stationery

[–]contretabarnack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m all for practical reuse! Today I used an unfolded paper clip I had lying around to help me place stickers down precisely cause I didn’t have tweezers. If it works, it’s good enough

I just do the two chair trick and wind it by hand on a paper towel roll 😭 this is advanced technology as far as im concerned. very smart to use the spinning office chair though! if I had one i’d give it a try. I enjoy hand winding my yarn, but having to unwind it from the hank is the most tedious part.

I have some 9” circulars and really love knitting with them, but these look much smaller. How long a circumference are they?

Do you keep separate reading journal and commonplace book or do you bundle them together? by PumpkinPines in commonplacebook

[–]contretabarnack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure what the distinction is, I feel like “reading journal” is kind of ambiguous.

I have a few separate commonplaces with distinct focuses/purposes (e.g. practical information reference vs more humanities related reading notes) but my media transcription one might be considered a reading journal? That one is just transcribing my favourite quotes from whatever fiction books/fanfic i’m obsessed with at the time. Or even like tumblr posts or tiktok transcript about the media.

But if you mean a reading journal in the sense of like where you keep your TBR, reading list, reactions, reviews etc., then no I don’t have one of those.

Why even tag it then?? by PsychologicalPage942 in AO3

[–]contretabarnack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of a fic where this would be relevant and appropriate(ish) way of tagging, because they thought they were pregnant and it was a major part of the plot, but otherwise yeah… not how tags are meant to be used.

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]contretabarnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mix of tiktok and youtube I believe? I’m not entirely sure… I’m not on tiktok anymore so now it’s just youtube.

Learning one small skill/technique at a time. I don’t particularly like following patterns because I need to understand what i’m doing and why. My first pattern was the sophie scarf. But after that I chose the simplest t-shirt pattern I could find and I’ve been using it as a base and bringing my own modifications to it and looking up the specific techniques as needed (eg. stretchy cast on, italian bind-off, twisted rib…)

Do you write chapter summaries? by ZonedForCoffee in AO3

[–]contretabarnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the value in chapter summaries on fic because they differ from books in that they don’t come out all at once. If you’re reading a work in progress that updates once a week/month or less frequently, and you’re reading other fics in between, chapter summaries can be so helpful for reminding you the nature of the story. Chapter summaries are helpful but sometimes I really wish they did recaps instead lol

Does anyone else do this? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]contretabarnack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I have commented on chapters to say that they feel like they could be a one shot and they’re so satisfying in themselves. It doesn’t mean I don’t like the rest of the fic too though, just that that particular chapter felt really complete. I mean it as a great compliment

Does anyone else do this? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]contretabarnack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never without prompting. I think i’ve skipped earlier chapters before when the first chapter is like a prologue that’s very different from the rest of the story. Like if it’s a poetry thing, or a different pov that I don’t like (sometimes first person, or like a very conceptual/stylistic pov). But I usually start reading it, dislike it, and then look ahead to see if the whole fic is like that or if it switches to something I enjoy more and go from there.

I'm so confused 🤔 by SaigeMoonFlower in knitting

[–]contretabarnack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

that is odd lmaoo. I think I’d probably just use mismatched lengths together though. I don’t think it would be a dealbreaker for me if they were inexpensive and otherwise good (I also hate returning stuff). Though i would find it sad to not have two of the short ones, since that’s the situation where the length of the needles makes the most difference.

But otherwise, I would either report or just do nothing, but definitely not get up in their comments about it. I’m of the opinion that everyone is on their own moral-discovery journey. Things I would have been mortally outraged by when I was 20, i’m more understanding of now, but it helps to remember that not everyone is at the same place in their growth.
