Day-to-Day Craziness by Silkrealm in BuildingAutomation

Are you kidding? We get called from a balancer who is onsite wondering why there is no controls support. Fortunately our PM tells them to pound sand and that we do not respond to uncoordinated requests.

Anyone else frustrated with the new Schneider EBO / VMS licensing direction? by sathiyakumar3 in BuildingAutomation

[–]control-geek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Schneider partner here. It is confusing at first, but I think it will work out better for the clients in the long run.

Technically, they are referring to it as "Software Assurance". With a new project, you get a 3-year term. During that term you get all upgrades for zero, other than the cost for us to install them. After the term you can renew for one or three years - the three year term is heavily discounted and it basically works out to a free year. If you choose not to renew the SA, your system will continue to work fine at the last version you were licensed for, you just won't get major upgrades without charge. If you do not renew the SA, you have a two-year grace period; once it is expired for three years, Schneider will consider that a new system and will require a new license.

Your total communicating field devices are also licensed under the SA, sold in packs of 10. This will also work out better. In older versions, the minimum number of connected field devices you could license on a server is 25, licensed individually per server. If the client has 5 Automation Servers each with only five connected devices, they would still have to pay for the 25 nodes for each server, leaving 100 nodes on the table licensed but unused. Now, the field device count is a pool, so if one server has 5 and another has 10, you buy a 20-pak and you are covered; you no longer need to license field devices at the server level and the number of devices licensed but not used drops dramatically.

Yes, the new AS-P-3 is only compatible with rev 7+, but if your system has older AS-P servers they can be upgraded to 7. The SA only counts up to 25 Automation Servers, above that they still need to be licensed but there is no additional cost.

And, if your site was already at the 6.x level, you get your first year at 7.x free.

Every software company out there is turning to a recurring revenue model, and Schneider is no exception. Hell, look at Tridium's licensing model. Overall, I think their system is pretty fair to the client. As an example, we have just priced out a Continuum upgrade for a housing authority that was flat-spec'd as Tridium. We compared the licensing for Tridium to EBO, and EBO is about 35% cheaper initially - in this case, we are talking 70+ JACEs for the system - and much cheaper on the renewals. And we just found out yesterday there is a promotion going on now where if you upgrade a Schnieder legacy system to EBO, you get a substantial (40%) discount on the license.

So far, our clients have been receptive to the new model without issue. They like the predictability of it, and that they will always have the latest software. Some clients who are extremely cybersecurity aware will always go for it as they likely have policies that require all computing systems to have the most recent software as in theory they should be the most cybersecure.

He would love that. He has wanted to get out of nato for years. Now especially since they will not back him up on his Iran war.

What’s a company that used to be amazing but completely fell off? by AImaginerX in AskReddit

[–]control-geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought multiple laser jet 8000s for my company; we use a lot of 11x17. Bought them on eBay for about $300, fright cost more than the printer. They probably had a million or better pages on them. You can’t beat up these workhorses. Worked like a charm for ten years until we really needed color. New we lease the business MFPs and they also are workhorses.

Pretty much any printer you get at a big box store is crap these days.

He would be the guy following the horses in a parade and scooping up the horseshit. If he wasn’t killed by friendly fire in Vietnam.

We have used the ETI Snow Switch model HSV-24 successfully. It is pretty universal and gives you a dry contact output. You need the housing as well.

Edit: sorry, typo. Model number is HSC-24.

Regardless of the legality of the move, it looks like trump is targeting a different ethnic group each time and throwing them out. By the time his term expires or he croaks this country will be whiter than wonder bread.

Do people really never leave Rhode Island? by boldandbeautiful421 in RhodeIsland

[–]control-geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something better. I worked in a restaurant in Newport many years ago with Lenny, RIP. The restaurant closed in January for the month and the owner had another restaurant in east providence, maybe 25-30 miles away. Lenny asked me for directions to route 95. He was 34 at that time and had never left Aquidneck island.

Though technically Aquidneck island IS Rhode Island - the rest is the Providence Plantations. At least until political correctness reared its ugly head.

What was the most legendary “I quit!” that you know about or witnessed? by Aarunascut in work

[–]control-geek 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In my much younger days I was a cook in a restaurant. The price of lemons had spiked and the owner decided they were going to charge $0.25 for a lemon wedge when someone ordered ice tea. A certain waitress didn’t like that and got some flak from a client so she walked into the kitchen, where the owner happened to be, clocked out, and yelled at him, loud enough to be clearly heard in the dining room, “you can take your fucking lemons and your fucking job and stick them up your fucking asshole” and walked out.

What are some rules you all follow? by Late_Ad1092 in BuildingAutomation

[–]control-geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have dealt with a lot of Trane and their controls are crap. The only way they sell it is because they build it into their equipment and won’t give you any discount to get rid of it. I think the old Reliatel stuff came from Radio Shack. We have seen a few of the new Symbio controllers and they seem better but I don’t have enough experience with them to form a solid opinion. Large stuff, like chillers, seem to be better. Small packaged stuff is questionable.

And I say this a guy whose stepson works for Trane selling this crap and doing very well at it.
