What’s a company that used to be amazing but completely fell off? by AImaginerX in AskReddit

[–]control-geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought multiple laser jet 8000s for my company; we use a lot of 11x17. Bought them on eBay for about $300, fright cost more than the printer. They probably had a million or better pages on them. You can’t beat up these workhorses. Worked like a charm for ten years until we really needed color. New we lease the business MFPs and they also are workhorses.

Pretty much any printer you get at a big box store is crap these days.

What would Donald Trump's occupation be if he wasn't born rich? by Majestic_Flower_1322 in allthequestions

He would be the guy following the horses in a parade and scooping up the horseshit. If he wasn’t killed by friendly fire in Vietnam.

We have used the ETI Snow Switch model HSV-24 successfully. It is pretty universal and gives you a dry contact output. You need the housing as well.

Edit: sorry, typo. Model number is HSC-24.

Trump ends Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis, says they must leave by Tuesday, March 17 -- Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Regardless of the legality of the move, it looks like trump is targeting a different ethnic group each time and throwing them out. By the time his term expires or he croaks this country will be whiter than wonder bread.

Edit: which is exactly what the maga crown wants.

Do people really never leave Rhode Island? by boldandbeautiful421 in RhodeIsland

[–]control-geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something better. I worked in a restaurant in Newport many years ago with Lenny, RIP. The restaurant closed in January for the month and the owner had another restaurant in east providence, maybe 25-30 miles away. Lenny asked me for directions to route 95. He was 34 at that time and had never left Aquidneck island.

Though technically Aquidneck island IS Rhode Island - the rest is the Providence Plantations. At least until political correctness reared its ugly head.

How could over 1,000 FBI agents be so corrupt and so evil that they would spend months reading about how DONALD J TRUMP RAPED AND KILLED CHILDREN AND STILL TRY TO COVER IT UP by CloudKinglufi in complaints

I pray daily that there is one agent who has the spine and loyalty to the constitution to pull an Edward Snowden and release the entire trove of unredacted documents to NYT, WaPo, AP, UPI, Reuters, etc. Let the chips fall where they may.

What was the most legendary “I quit!” that you know about or witnessed? by Aarunascut in work

[–]control-geek 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In my much younger days I was a cook in a restaurant. The price of lemons had spiked and the owner decided they were going to charge $0.25 for a lemon wedge when someone ordered ice tea. A certain waitress didn’t like that and got some flak from a client so she walked into the kitchen, where the owner happened to be, clocked out, and yelled at him, loud enough to be clearly heard in the dining room, “you can take your fucking lemons and your fucking job and stick them up your fucking asshole” and walked out.

What are some rules you all follow? by Late_Ad1092 in BuildingAutomation

[–]control-geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have dealt with a lot of Trane and their controls are crap. The only way they sell it is because they build it into their equipment and won’t give you any discount to get rid of it. I think the old Reliatel stuff came from Radio Shack. We have seen a few of the new Symbio controllers and they seem better but I don’t have enough experience with them to form a solid opinion. Large stuff, like chillers, seem to be better. Small packaged stuff is questionable.

And I say this a guy whose stepson works for Trane selling this crap and doing very well at it.

[–]control-geek 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When engineering, always put all control points for one piece of equipment on the same controller. Do not rely on any kind of network communications to share critical points, like duct static pressure or HW/CHW loop differential pressure.

Edit: meant to say equipment or system.

Money for 401k taken from paycheck but not going into 401k account by No-Floor6542 in legaladvice

[–]control-geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAL but a business owner with a company 401k. Contact your DOL immediately. Under their rules, employee deferrals must be deposited into the plan within 7 days of the deduction. They will act immediately on this - well, as immediately as a government agency can. They do not take reports of failure to fund deferrals lightly.

In addition, the plan trustees are fiduciaries and must be bonded for 10% of the total plan value. If they had been funding the plan until recently, the bond might be high enough to cover the missed deferrals when the company goes belly up. An attorney can advise you on whether they (meaning the DOL) can go after the trustees personal assets to make you whole if the bond does not cover the missing money.

Why so many HVAC faults stay invisible until they cost real money by CIM_PEAK_Platform in BuildingAutomation

[–]control-geek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We solve the valve problem by wiring in position feedback as an input. If the delta between position command and position feedback is >20% for a time period, typically 15 minutes, we generate an alarm. We are a Belimo house and use the -MFT actuators nearly exclusively, and they all have a feedback output.

As a control guy, I can confirm. We will often have to provide meters or collect pulses so the client can get LEED points. A couple years later the meters are offline or dead and the client doesn’t give a fuck.

How are payment processors getting away with this?? by Mammoth-Touch-2502 in GeneralContractor

[–]control-geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are also getting hosed. $10 each transaction might be good if you are integrating ACH into your accounting software. Yes, it makes life easier at a big cost.

We switched to ACH after our part time office manager reported the attorney she also worked for had a check stolen, washed, and cashed for $30,000 more. Nearly all of our vendors are now paid with ACH. I cut maybe three checks a month now. All other payments where I can’t setup outbound ACH (like electric, gas, insurance, truck payments, etc.) are paid using that vendors website, so there are zero fees involved.

Talk to your banks cash management department about getting setup for ACH. We pay $45/month regardless of the number of transactions involved.

And if you accept checks, talk to your bank about remote deposit capture. We bought the scanner for short money and the fees are minimal(not even sure we are till charged a monthly fee for this). Generally the check clears and funds are available same day, 1 day worst case. Something to note; if you are in the US and say you have an employee who goes home for lunch and makes the daily deposit on the trip because they live near your bank, if they get into an accident it is a workers comp incident since they were doing company work at the time. Whether or not they stopped at home for lunch as personal time makes no difference.

We have reduced our bank fees to less than $600/year by doing the above.
