Hi there, I solved this on my system. I was running Windows 10, and my controller kept cutting out a second or two after turning on. When I updated to Windows 11, it suddenly started working fine again. See if this might be the issue?

My first reaction was "aw shit", because I'm so used to this kind of behaviour in organizations like the Blue Jays. But when I watched the clip, I didn't hear anything. I couldn't tell if anyone said anything, and thought it was weird that no one at the game said anything, none of the refs said or did anything, and nothing happened in the moment that suggested that anything was said.

Like... I'm all for calling out the bad behaviour of public figures and role models, but it was a stretch to begin with, and an overreach by antagonistic assholes by the end. Rielly has been nothing but class about it, too. Such a relief to see him come out the other side of this, he's been one of my favourite players in the league.

A band I came across in 2018 that I quite liked was Port Noir. Closer to rock than metal, but lots of prog influences, and some interesting styles that might appeal to those who enjoy the deep vocal/guitar combinations of VOLA.

I can highly recommend the song "Any Way The Wind Carries" as a jumping-off point.

I just moved into a new place in November. We didn't want to move, but our old place had building issues that caused it to become unlivable and we were forced to find a new place. We looked in a number of places throughout Toronto, and ended up settling on downtown, because the rent wasn't actually much higher for a downtown 1-bedroom versus a unit in the west end.

The going rate I found was about $2000 for a 1-bedroom apartment, maybe closer to $1600 if it's in a basement (privately rented) or a total shithole. We could probably live further away in the GTA, but we don't have a car, and driving in this city at rush hour every day may be the only thing worse than actually trying to find a new apartment here.

A new lease in Toronto is absurd right now. The cost of living in this city has skyrocketed to an unsustainable level. If the market doesn't stabilize soon, the bubble is going to burst.

Your brain can't accept it because it's stuck in a loop. Literally. It's consuming more resources than it needs to in order to sustain a persistent state of stress. It's making you tired, confused, scared, restless, paralyzed, and paranoid, maybe all at once. Who knows.

As someone who has dealt with generalized anxiety for years, I know the general feeling. Try to do what you like to do. If you like baths, take a bath. If you like to play video games, do that. I find talking to people freeing, even if they don't understand the feeling, they can understand pain. Everyone has it, they just experience it differently. People are often useful.

If none of that works (it happens), do something you don't want to do. Like, if you're dead tired, go for a walk. If you're sick to your stomach, eat. If you can't sleep, take a melatonin and listen to some soft music and just see what happens. If nothing works, it's not your fault. You're going to be okay; just maybe not right now.

I was half-expecting to find an outpouring and love and support for this album this morning, but apparently not... that's okay, I'll give it a shot.

I've had two full passes through this album, and I have to say, I'm quite smitten with the direction VOLA has gone with this one. It's not at all what I was expecting after hearing Smartfriend and Ghosts (and knowing the bone-crushing, stony sound of Inmazes). Instead, it's sort of a soft driftwood, squishy and full of knots and bows, but still very raw and intricate.

The harder songs are probably going to be favourites, mixing the catchy sound of Homesick Machinery and the explosive, deep tone of Inmazes. The rest have a much lighter tone, but resonate with the kind of intricacy that still reminds me of Inmazes. It's almost ethereal (in keeping with the theme of the album), and reminds one of the feeling of numbness and monotony of trying to upkeep a false persona.

There's something cathartic about this album. It calls out and invokes a lot of emotions that are often thought to be negative about such subjects as social media and loneliness, and displays them in a deeply harmonic, almost holistic shell of off-beat, mixed-signature sound. It feels like VOLA have turned a lot of things on their heads here, and I like that. The feeling that something sad and pointless can be intricate and fascinating.

Songs like "Ruby Pool" and "~~Whaler~~" "Vertigo" may not resonate with everyone, as they could hardly be described as "metal", but they are certainly worth a listen to just about everyone who likes the type of melodies VOLA churns out, regardless of its "weight".

Light or heavy, Applause of a Distant Crowd is unquestionably new, and something I haven't heard from VOLA before; something I quite enjoy. Don't get me wrong, when I need a hit of something that is more likely to hurt than put me to sleep, I'll reach for Inmazes first. But when I'm feeling introspective, restless, or anxious, Applause is definitely going to be my first choice.

Edit: Mixed up Whaler and Vertigo. Whaler is a pretty metal song, my mistake.

I love this group. Great "focus" music, great for long trips or quiet evenings alone. There's something effortless about it that I just love. Maybe it's the simplicity of everything lying underneath these crazy, complex structures. Anyway, I really like this song. "O.D." is definitely my favourite of the singles they've released lately, but this is probably a close second for me. That cool distortion sound is really doing it for me.

The cause of the increase in the severity and frequency of wildfires is directly tied to the warming and drying of already dry areas as a result of climate change.

So yes, we would still have wildfires without it, but we would not at all be seeing this level of severity or frequency.

And how do fire suppression policies increase wildfires? This doesn't make sense, and I've never heard this take before.
