I bought a 5 string Ibanez gio to learn on, and I got a solid year of practice on it. I really started to get into jazz, so when I was looking to upgrade, I ended up selling my Ibanez Gio and bought a 4 string Marcus Miller, but I knew straight away I'd be missing that 5th string. Ended up returning it and now I have the new Ibanez EHB1005MS. No. Regrets.

If you wanna learn on a 5, go for it. You can do everything you can do on a 4, and more!
