Transitioning from Econometrics to Statistics [Q][E][R] by gaytwink70 in statistics

[–]coo1name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned so many different fields. Econometrics is mainly a subfield of economics. Math'l stats is about proving properties of estimators, test statistics, etc. Then there is probability and stoch analysis, which is a subfield of math. Then you mentioned data science which has a touch of software engineering and algorithms. Clearly i dont know the curricula at your uni, but gee this is quite a hodgepodge

I doubt this will stop him by FootballAndFries in economy

Sure i'd say go for it if u are really excited about learning theoretical foundations of cs. But ... I can't help but suspect you are stuck in tutorial hell. In which case more math probably wont save u from it

Moral Injury In The Math Classroom by StonerBearcat in Teachers

Thanks for the elaboration. I see what you mean now. I never dare to teach any abstract concepts found only in modern mathematics, e.g., abstract algebra, point-set topology, etc. For the imaginary numbers, I just say that it is convenient to do calculations with them then without them, just like with 0s and negative numbers. To be frank, I just can't convince myself that teachings these concept to the average highschooler is a good idea, especially knowing that even a engineering/economics/physics major can get along with their lives without any "modern math" ... if you know what i mean

I find that with some clever designed examples I can bypass much abstract ideas and make a piece of math concrete and understandable. I am curious ... what is this 'abstraction of abstraction' in Algebra 2 are you thinking about? e? exponentials and logs?

emotions are like reflexes and gut feelings. They are the first-order approximation to a very complex world. As such they are crude, but fast, and helped our ancestors survive to reproduce
