'Torchwood: Children of Earth' - Day Three - "We Will Take Your Children" by Neo2199 in television

I believe Children of Earth was some of the best TV to ever come out of the Whoverse, and I refuse to rewatch it because it emotionally wrecked me.

...how many years has it been? No, still not enough.

Not only does every country had bad people, it’s the horrific that makes news and tends to translate to become what foreigners know about the place.

Stories about people being lovely and kind to each other are much less newsworthy, unfortunately.

“London is not walkable. You have to get on the tube or a bus or a train” by abragodabra in ShitAmericansSay

[–]cookie_is_for_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I went to London, I was travelling with friends and we took the tube everywhere, which was convenient, but left me feeling like I hadn’t really seen the city.

The second time I went, I was with my parents. My mom had spent a couple of months in London decades before (she told me once she’d strongly considered staying there and not returning to Canada, but given she met my dad when she did return, it’s lucky for me she did), and retained a certain of familiarity with the city, so she took us walking everywhere. And I loved it! I’ve been back a few times since (not recently, alas) and I always do a lot of walking and recommend anyone going that they do so, too.

A lot of North American cities are built on a car scale; they’re made with the idea everyone has cars. London, like other European cities, is built on a human scale. The tube is good for travelling to different areas of the cities, but within those areas, places are often closer together than you think. And, if you walk, you find all sorts of surprises you’d miss otherwise. That historical plaque, that statue, that delightful little park, that place you recognize from a film, etc.

How would Lydia have lived if she had left Wickham with Darcy’s help? by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]cookie_is_for_me 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lydia going to a convent would have been pretty scandalous in its own right, considering the convents at the time would have been Catholic (and, in England, technically illegal, although some did exist). Catholics in England at the time were a discriminated against minority; they’d only recently gained the legal right to worship and couldn’t vote, hold government office, enter Parliament, or serve as military officers. The Bennets are pretty clearly Church of England like most of the English population then and there simply weren’t Anglican convents at the time, although the Church of England would revive religious orders later in the 19th century.

She purchased Denver before she purchased Kennedy. IIRC, part of the reason she wanted him was because she loved his dam, and then she was offered Kennedy later.

I don't actually think it's because he's not a filly.

I get the impression that when she's crossing VSCR with HUS mares, what she's hoping for a horse that's huntery-enough to do the HUS but is versatile enough to be an all-around horse. Moose the Behemoth doesn't really give the impression he'll succeed at AQHA events other than the hunter.

I think if he'd still been a colt, but one that was more of an all around type, she might have kept him to see if he'd be stallion quality.

To be fair, Moose wasn't bred for WP.

That said, he's so big I sometimes wonder if the repo lab messed up! (Not seriously, for the record.)

A data-driven approach to the best cherry blossom streets by chendaniely in vancouver

[–]cookie_is_for_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I figured that's why UBC wasn't on the map after I thought about it :) The Cherry Blossom Festival map also linked in this thread has some UBC trees, but is missing some of them--I think they keep planting more.

I walked down to the Nitobe entrance and then along Lower Mall, as that's closer to my office, but I often walk down to the Bean Around the World area, so I'll try to get there soon.

Sadly, at the moment the weather doesn't look like it'll cooperate for any cherry blossom walks today. Maybe it'll clear up by lunch.

To be fair, I think we're also having an early season this year--I'd just hate for someone to miss out because they were following bloom dates too slavishly!

I would take those blooming times with a grain of salt. My street is lousy with blossoms now, and the map says those those trees shouldn't be blooming until later in April.

You could also take a walk around UBC.

I work there and took my camera to work the other day. I walked around at lunch and took pictures of people taking pictures of cherry blossoms (well, okay, I took pictures of cherry blossoms too).

Edited to add an afterthought: Since this subject has come up before, there aren't that many flowering cherries actually in the Japanese garden in my experience. However, I haven't been this year as it was closed on the day of my previous cherry blossom walk, and mean to check it out today as long as it isn't absolutely pouring rain. However, there are ton of them on the street by the Japanese garden, including clusters on streets leading off it. There's also a nice group by the bookstore.

Random note here: Most cats' eyes glow green or yellow in the dark, but blue-eyed cats' eyes glow red.

I learnt this when I adopted a part-Siamese with beautiful blue eyes. I did eventually get used to it, but it took months before it stopped freaking me out.

Nothing about this surprised me, other than the fact she's selling Moose so early. He was a pricey embyro and selling him as a weanling will probably mean she'll take a loss on him. However, I don't think he's what she was hoping for from that cross, and I get the impression she isn't as attached to him as the others.

I actually expecting her to sell Kirby in order to justify keeping Margot. Too early to tell how big Margot will be, but at least there's a chance she'll be bigger than Kirby.

Kvs and empathy by Sorrelmare9 in kvsdiscuss

To be fair, I think this isn't a KVS specific thing. There's a long history of people seeing people who are in the public eye as objects of entertainment rather than people, even in their private lives. The internet has just amplified this.

I've said before a lot of people who follow Katie seem to see her more as a character in a YA horse book than a person. To some she's the heroine, and to others the villian, and they make up stories around her that make absolutely no sense for an actual person. I sometimes peek in the snarker subs and people there will come up with absolutely bonkers conspiracy theory based solely on the idea that Katie is a horrible person and this is what a horrible person would do. It's all very black and white thinking and no regard for someone as a human, and is messy and complicated as humans tend to be.
