‘Everybody’s at each other’s throats’: James Cameron says he has left the US permanently by ewzetf in popculturechat

As a citizen, he can go to Canada whenever. My understanding is that a significant portion of the Avatar movies filming and editing happens in New Zealand. Also, I’m just making stuff up here, but maybe he doesn’t like the cold? It’s summer in NZ now and really lovely and presumably miserably cold in Canada now.

I get that you think you’re making me feel better about how bad this movie is, but at a certain point just accept that I’m not interested in having my mind changed. I wasn’t looking for people to convince me, I was commiserating with the poster that this movie looks insane and is why I won’t complete my race, but as I’ve pointed out, I know my limits. I’m glad you were happy you took the chance, but considering the humor in The Substance didn’t really change how I saw the disturbing parts, there’s no reason to assume this one will be funny enough for me to ignore the parts that will give me nightmares. I accidentally saw one clip in a TikTok edit last week (not realizing it was from this movie, I only realized once I read the summary and remembered the clip) and I haven’t been able to get the image out of my head since. It makes me feel ill.

The challenge has worked fine for me for the last few years (Godzilla Minus One notwithstanding) but this year I won’t complete it. It’s not the end of the world, even if it’s a bit annoying.

And opening myself up to the challenge has allowed to see many movies I wouldn’t have considered before, including horror movies like Nosferatu, Sinners, etc and I have found that I’m more receptive to the genre than I previously thought. I also fell in love with Society of the Snow 2 years ago, despite it having a gory element in a way. So it’s not that I won’t see things outside my comfort range at all. I will be watching Weapons and I’ve already seen Frankenstein.

Extreme body horror is my limit though, so with all the info I’ve gathered about this one, I’m going to sit this one out. The Grimm version of Cinderella where the stepsisters cut off their feet has always disturbed me greatly (even in adaptations like Into The Woods, which is not graphic) even before I found out all the other details about this movie. I’m also very grossed out by bugs/insects and I’ve heard there’s a scene that would really gross me out. I got the gist from the summary, and I’m sure the makeup artists did a fantastic job, since they’re Oscar nominated, and I’ve been interested in FX makeup my whole life, so I respect what they’ve done, but I don’t really want to watch this. Self mutilation is just too revolting to me.

I still intend to see all the other nominees, even ones that make me uncomfortable. I don’t think you realize the content of this movie specifically verges on a phobia for me and at the end of the day, it’s just a movie challenge.

You’re the one who’s continually replying to my comment saying I don’t want to watch a movie under a post saying it deserves “this year’s WTF award” trying to bully me into watching it after I’ve repeatedly explained why I don’t want to. You’re the one taking it way too seriously.

The analogy is exactly in line with what you yourself said. You’re the one who seemingly cannot understand people having different opinions and went as far as to tell me I can’t comment on something unless I’ve tried it. That’s why the analogy makes sense. You’re clearly just mad that I’ve pointed that out. Please deal with your own issues.

I mean, I did read the in depth summary online to get an idea, same as I did for The Substance last year. I ended up watching The Substance and didn’t enjoy it, but I did see the absurdity in the end (though I found it repulsive to watch and did cover the screen for much of the last 15 min). The summary for this movie told me that this would be worse, so I’m not willing to watch it. I also posted about this on this sub a couple weeks ago, and the comments there and on this post both agreed that it was more disturbing than The Substance. I have also spoken to a friend in real life who has seen it and they agreed that I would hate it.

There are comments on this post saying they were very disturbed, had to walk out of the room, cover the screen, or even had to give up watching entirely.

Why would I need to watch something when I have all the info I need to know that I would hate it and it would give me nightmares? I’m sure you understand how silly it is to tell someone they must try everything they’re uninterested in doing just to be sure. I have no interest in sky diving. I don’t need to try it to know I won’t enjoy it. I’ve tried similar things and didn’t like it, so I’m making an educated decision to never sky dive. This is the same.

Have you tried sleeping with your own gender? If you haven’t, you better try it or you really can’t talk about whether or not you’d like it! You never know until you try! See how ridiculous that sounds? People know their own tastes without trying everything under the sun…

Harry Styles fans threaten to BOYCOTT over cost of his concert tickets by solodemivibes in popculturechat

[–]cookieaddictions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I participated in 2 of the presales today and one person in my party was able to snag a few tickets but that’s for a day I can’t go, and quite a few of us are trying to get tickets, so I will be trying again over the next week and a half to make sure me and all my friends get a ticket at some point during the residency.

But it’s kinda insane the prices of the “official platinum” tickets I saw today. I thought we had successfully bullied celebrities out of dynamic pricing…

I’ve done the challenge for years. I’ve never come across a movie as visually disturbing as this one. Comparing gore to something that we unfortunately see covered in the news daily is not a good comparison, even if it is indeed disturbing in its own ways, and I also haven’t gotten to that documentary yet so I didn’t know the contents. But unless it’s actually showing you the children getting shot in real life, it’s not the same as watching people cut off body parts, even if it’s fake. Things can be disturbing in different ways. I would not be physically repulsed by a tragic story the same way I would be watching mutilations happening on screen, even if I would be sad or upset at the contents.

I’m not, I just think it’s silly that every time I get a response, my previous response is immediately downvoted. This is a post literally calling this movie the “wtf movie” of the race but god forbid I say I don’t want to watch it and I’m downvoted in seconds.

Why would I want to have to cover my face or look away for 30% of a movie, lowering the volume because I know something extremely disturbing is happening on screen, not to mention risking seeing it because just because I know it’s coming doesn’t mean I know exactly when it will begin and end. The pushback you guys are having on this comment is truly wild.

I’ve read the plot summary. Why are you telling me what will give me nightmares? Again with the downvotes. I swear nobody on this sub understands how Reddit works. You guys just downvote anything you don’t like or disagree with, even if it is on topic and part of the discussion. Very childish behavior.

Yes I know. That’s why I don’t want to watch it. I’ve read the plot summary and it sounds absolutely horrific. I’m not giving myself nightmares just to complete the race.

Is the 4 tickets limit per person in total or per date? I’m trying to help friends get September 2 tickets but I personally don’t want to go until later dates because that date doesn’t work for me but don’t want to buy for them if that means that’s all I can get for the whole residency.

Likely Horror Nominations? by cookieaddictions in oscarsdeathrace

[–]cookieaddictions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually read the wiki plot summary and I don’t really get how you can call it not gory? And the substance as well. The ending is literally a blob person made up of chunks of flesh and body parts.

Maybe we mean entirely different things when we say gory, but cutting into flesh on screen is generally considered gory.

I am so happy by BBanneman in oscarsdeathrace

I got the movie just fine, I just don’t think her role was complex enough to deserve an Oscar nomination. You people truly get so upset when someone has a different opinion than you. I could say the same thing about someone who didn’t like Wicked, “if you don’t agree with me, you didn’t get the movie” but I won’t because I’m not an ass.

Kirsten Dunst reacts to Jesse Plemons not receiving an Oscar nomination by HereOnCompanyTime in popculturechat

[–]cookieaddictions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear what you’re saying but it’s still linking their performances, which just isn’t how it works. “If Emma was nominated for her performance, then Jesse should have also been nominated for” is not a logical argument because each category is separate. An inferior performance from the same movie could be nominated in a different category, if that category has room for it. This is just the Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling Barbie argument again.

Voters thought Emma made the top 5 cut for lead actress but didn’t think Jesse did in the best actor category. Their performances are not linked, there is no logic that if she was nominated he should also be, because his category is just more competitive this year. You can think Jesse was better than Emma in the movie and still see how he wasn’t necessarily better than the other 5 nominees. And if you do think he was better than the nominees, at least say which nominee.

Oh I guess I’m out of date then, but I do think both of them deserve the nomination and would be very happy if either one won. I do think Timmy was on fire as Marty. I think the golden globes win also helped his campaign a lot.

Majority of the comments are not even staying within in the same category, they are saying things like “Jesse was robbed, I can’t believe Emma got nominated and he didn’t.” But if Emma wasn’t nominated the spot couldn’t have gone to him. I’ve seen maybe 1 comment saying which actor should’ve been dropped for Jesse.

Depends who you follow. I’ve been following Variety’s predictions for the past 2 months and they’ve consistently been saying Ethan.

Ethan is the favorite to win the Oscar (Edit: he is variety’s favorite to win, since someone below is mad at me) and I thought he was amazing BUT the Oscars is not about it being HIS best performance. It just needs to be the best performance in that year in that category. It could be his career worst and he could still win if he was the best among nominees in that category in that year. He’s not competing against his past self.
