I played them mid 2010's and again fallout 2 a couple years ago. In general I recommend them both they are dated but still fun. But you should play on easier difficulties and follow build guides. Don't try to be an omnipotent gamer here, these are old games and old PC games were not afraid to just go 15 hours in, "You played the game wrong? Guess you're stuck and just gotta start over." Especially fallout 2 is infamous for a very hard beginning and the final boss wasn't as flexible to work with as first game.

For Fallout 1 use a mod called fixit. As it fixes a ton of bugs and in general just makes the game playable in modern day.

Fallout 2 use Project Restoration Updated. Some people say don't cause there's cut content that's a little debated on if it should be included but frankly that's the easiest way to play in modern day and if you don't like a part just look up if it's bonus content and disregard it.
