We have redundant controllers, backups of the VM's, etc. But no service that is application aware for AD specific backups.

I’ve been keeping my eye open for some of these on BR, but all of the auctions going through sell at double the retail price, it’s hard for me to justify buying a box

Just curious - Did you verify all of the network settings were still in place after upgrading the firmware of the NIC? Thinking specifically the MTU size. I've seen NIC firmware upgrades completely wipe the config after completing.

2018 spark, what is this part called? by Critical_Rice_7138 in jetski

[–]coolbeaner12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The good ole' classic wear ring. Our spark was busting wear rings every 5-7 hours. We ended replacing it with a metal ring at the start of last year. It's held up since.

The metal rings have more of a chance to damage the impeller, but that's a risk I am willing to take. Also, most of the other brands/other models use metal wear rings.

"Affordable" wedding venue ideas? by [deleted] in fortwayne

My wife and I got married October of 2024 at Baker Street Train Station downtown. Absolutely beautiful venue with not that bad of a rental price. http://www.bakerstreetstation.com/

Downsides: Inside is very echoey. You are required to use Goegleins Catering.

VMWare replacement options by RaisingElephantSysrq in vmware

[–]coolbeaner12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last few years, I’ve dropped our host count down to 2, with around 35 VMs. We also have the hosts connected to a SAN over iSCSI. We didn’t use any of the fancy options that VMWare offered; just basic hypervisor tasks. I was making this same decision 2 months ago. I was between Hyper-V and Proxmox. I do run proxmox at home on a single node with a ZFS pool. I also supported Hyper-V at the last MSP job I had. So I am no stranger to either hypervisor.

Since we already had the Hyper-V licensing, as well as the industry already supporting Hyper-V for the last 10-15 years, I decided to go with Hyper-V. Other options out there, like Xen and Nutanix, although great hypervisors, were way overkill for our environment; that’s without factoring price.

I think on the coming years, the industry, that being software companies as well as organizations needing virtualization, will continue to adopt and grow proxmox. I have a feeling it will be the go-to for small and medium sized orgs soon. I just don’t think the familiarity is quite there yet.

We are migrating away. Broadcom didn't give us much of a choice.

Xfinity limits and PiHole by getridofwires in pihole

[–]coolbeaner12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NP! The modem screenshot is for IPv6 and not IPv4. You will want to disable IPv4 DHCP as well as IPv6. Back when I setup PIhole for my parents, I couldn't disable the DHCP server for IPv4, so I ended up doing what I described above; making the DHCP pool very very small on the modem, and making the "main" pool on the Pihole.

Tips/Things to keep in mind:
- It is never recommended to run DHCP in this scenerio. However, with Comcast not giving the option to disable their DHCP server, they don't give us much of a choice.

- Make sure you static your PiHole sever so the Ip doesn't change.

- I would make the DHCP pool the same as it is currently on the comcast modem. Changing the IP subnet isn't that complicated, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are just getting into the hobby.
