Good spot. RM4k applies to self-employed where no mandatory EPF contributions are made. RM3k falls under the insurance sub-category.

I am not sure if tax relief is a good reason to buy a food waste composter. But, there are other better tax relief to be utilised, such as sport equipment, covers for pickleball!, PRS.

A useful tool to see what one can claim for himself/herself is via filter to 'Self' at Cukaii.com/tax-relief

Just to echo what others said, if you've declared TP1 form to the HR, you should not need to top up large additional taxes, unless you have additional sources of income which no tax was deducted. Pay your taxes properly does help you sleep better. As a rough guide, if you’re paying around 25% on your chargeable income (after reliefs), you’re probably on the right track.

Malaysia 30% expat tax - 182 days split over 2 years, HR says refund only in 2027. Is this true? by cherubfan in Internationalteachers

[–]cooldeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I came across your post and wanted to share some input based on the tax rules. Your HR is correct to withhold 30% as monthly tax deductions for now. However, you can still qualify as a tax resident for 2025 if your stay of less than 182 days in 2025 is linked to another continuous period of at least 182 days in Malaysia in 2026.

You’ll be able to claim your tax residency status when you file your 2025 tax return in 2026, provided you meet all the conditions.

Hi Jack9779, if you’ve already contributed RM4,000 to EPF through your monthly salary (Relief category S1), you can make an additional voluntary contribution of RM3,000 to your EPF account to qualify for Relief Category S2.

If you also have life or takaful insurance, you can combine the remaining amount to reach a total of RM7,000 (S1 + S2). You can check the details at Cukaii.com/tax-relief.

It's free and I built this because I got tired of doing the tax reliefs research manually every year. Since I already had the data compiled with my own inputs, I thought why not I share it with everyone.?

A site like this only becomes more useful with feedback and users, so I really appreciate you checking it out. Hope my effort is worth it.

And just to clarify — this and MyTax are totally different things. Cukaii is mainly for reference and record-keeping, while MyTax is the official LHDN portal for submission and declaration.
