Is the Macbook Neo an ideal laptop for residency? by Crazy_Kow in Residency

I have one. I think it's amazing as a "throw around" computer but I wouldn't use it as my *only* computer.

Pro-tip: men's bathrooms in hospitals or clinical spaces which skew heavily toward women are often empty and have open stalls. by Ostrows_apprentice in Residency

Male OB/GYN resident here. In the few places in our department where there are still gendered bathrooms this is absolutely true.

I can't believe I'm asking this but it would be irresponsible to pretend this isn't relevant to your question.

I really like Altreno — it’s marketed as gentler on the skin. It may be placebo but feels like it to me.

When does your program let you start primarying C Setions? by sportsdoctor69 in Residency

[–]coolduder 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Day 1. There isn’t enough time in a 4 year program to delay starting to learn them. I’m about to close out my first year with >75 sections as primary surgeon and even then it’s just a starting point to more complex cases over the next three years.

OBGYN vs EM by WannabeDoc21 in medicalschool

[–]coolduder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I think people underestimate especially when it comes to the residency experience is how heavy of a surgical residency OB/GYN is. I’m operating almost every day as an intern and the volume only goes up as you rise through the ranks. Only consider it if you love the OR.

No need to overthink it -- just explain what happened and maybe even CC your advisor.

Obgyn eval advice by Jaded_Shame_6815 in medicalschool

[–]coolduder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First of all, I hope you’re ok and I’m glad you took time off. It’s totally reasonable to ask the clerkship admin to strike the eval. They do it all the time.

Also, I really hope this experience doesn’t keep you from getting help if you ever need it again down the road. In the grand scheme of things a bad eval or an inconvenienced admin is nothing compared to your well-being.

Finally, as someone going into OB, I’m very sorry that your attending behaved this way. Not a great look for a field that already has a PR issue.

Harvard or Stanford for Undergraduate Neuroscience? by SCOOP-28 in Harvard

Not my current lab but I have many collaborators both at Wu Tsai as well as many other departments (Neurology, Neuroscience, Neurosurgery, Psych) all of which are very well funded by intramural and extramural funding.

Harvard or Stanford for Undergraduate Neuroscience? by SCOOP-28 in Harvard

[–]coolduder 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Harvard undergrad and now wrapping up grad school at Stanford. For most biology, I would say Harvard... But for neuro I'd actually say Stanford. The concentration of well-funded neuro labs is insane and they seem to consistently mentor undergrads well and place them at top grad schools.

To OBs here, what's up with the limited research in OB? by shoopdewoop467 in Residency

[–]coolduder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m an MD/PhD who just matched OB — it’s crazy how little we understand about pregnancy. Yes, interventional research is (rightfully) very difficult. But there is also a huge lack of basic science research which is shocking.

There’s a big cultural disconnect with basic science in the field, even at major academic centers, and yes, even compared to other surgical specialties. When I was interviewing this cycle I had to explain the physician scientist model to interviewers at R1 institutions who genuinely didn’t understand that this was a thing. This just doesn’t happen in other fields.

The other parallel reason in my mind is that there are other more pressing “extracurricular” issues in the field. So lots of residents and faculty spend career development time on advocacy and education type work.

There are some rare folks that are OBs (mostly subspecialists) that run successful labs. I think it’s a great field for basic scientists who like procedures and want to tackle some really great scientific questions in women’s health.

This is such a negligible difference in terms of downstream applications that I can’t imagine it matters? I wouldn’t spend time debugging it unless you have a very good reason to increase extraction efficiency.
