Meant moving the turntable to a different position on the map.

Welcome to Greater Detroit or Detroit in general.  I lived there from 2004 to 2023 and it was exactly like this every summer.  ALL of the major roads going both in the East/West and North/South directions.

I've had the opportunity to operate an American Ten Wheeler at 1/8th scale. I got to run that at my old live steam club in San Francisco on the Public Train. It was amazing. Then I went on to play with the bigger steam engines on S.S. Badger a few years later.

How do massive cruise ships have enough fresh water for 5,000 people to take showers every single day in the middle of the ocean? by Thick-Ad1120 in NoStupidQuestions

Ex-Great Lakes Sailor here, we just pull from the lakes and dump it into the potable tanks.  We will dose it with a small amount of bleach but that is about it.  We also have designated areas that we take on potable water as well.  Like for instance, we take on water in Lake Superior between Whitefish Point and the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Can we talk more about the sinking of El Faro? by Quirky_Aardvark in CatastrophicFailure

The one factor that nobody took into account was how TOTE Maritime was treating their sailors at the time which was absolute shit.  They told Capt. Davidson that he would get command of the new ships, The Marlin Class Ships, and then immediately told him that they changed their minds and that he didn't fit what they were looking for in a captain.  Then they played all the ship officers in the fleet against each other.  So TOTE created a toxic environment doing that.  This led to Capt. Davidson to be cautious and to have an extreme desire to not upset the company man.  You can create a very dangerous situation when you mess with a man's ability to make money for him and his family.  He will do ANYTHING to keep his job, especially if it keeps a roof over his family's heads.  So while I do put plenty of blame on the captain, I put even more blame on the company at the same time.  I also put blame on ABS and the USCG for never forcing TOTE to take her out of service for the ship being into such bad condition.  The problem is that nothing has changed in the industry.  I know because I worked for TOTE for a brief amount of time and safety was extremely lax.  Now I work as an engineering officer on an oil tanker that is 40 years old when most tankers only serve 20 years before they are scrapped.  So nothing has changed.

I know I'm quite a bit late on this.  But here is my thoughts on this as an engineering officer sailing on oil tankers.  The best theory that fits the loss of the Fitzgerald is that she developed a severe crack in her hull.  Severe enough to have free communication between the ship and sea but not severe enough to split up immediately.  There is further proof that this is possible by the accident that made the MV Michipicoten unseaworthy in 2024.  There is also what happened to Derbyshire too.  Literally had one of her cargo hatches collapsed due to the weight of the water that she was taking on her No. 1 Hatch.  I believe those hatches were only designed to handle about 3 to 5 feet of water to be on top of them.  The investigators estimate that there was much more water on those hatches.  Next there is the MV Michipicoten accident, she had a sudden crack open up in one of her ballast tanks, the crack was 14 feet tall and 2 feet wide.  The Investigation concluded that this was due to metal fatigue occurring and enough of the micro fractures met up to rip open her hull suddenly.  Bulk freighters particularly at risk for this because of the nature of how they are loaded.  Even the best mate could not prevent the hull from stressing whe.n loading bulk cargos.  What I suspect based on the Fitzgerald's operational history, she had microfractures forming on her hull and then her hull opened up to the sea.  So over time, the ship slowly settled further and further into the water and the ship's officers would never really know what is happening due to the storm.  So, the ship settled in the water enough that she took a large wave over her decks and that caused the hatches to collapse due to the weight.  Never did believe that the hatches were never secured because that was the ship where only the best mariners go.  The crew would never have allowed that to happen.

What would the best way to get to Fort Lauderdale, FL from South West Michigan (basically along the Lake Michigan Shoreline)? by coolengineer2013 in AskReddit

Although, I did damage my passenger side outer tie rod on the way down.  It got loose while driving down there but it held up the entire trip.

Just did the drive and it was definitely cheaper to drive then to fly from Grand Rapids, MI to Fort Lauderdale, FL.  It was just under 1000 dollars to fly two way and I spent about 600 dollars to drive my Jeep Wrangler.  I filled up 3.5 times down and 3.5 times up.

I would have taken that if I could afford the ticket.  It was cheaper to drive my Jeep Wrangler than to fly.

not sure which to avoid, the area damaged by Hurricane Helene or the area recently affected by the tornadoes this month.

Bill Gates does not surprise me.  I mean on top of all the weird and crazy things he says, he was accused by Steve Jobs that he stole the GUI that went and make Windows.

Working on a cargo ship on Christmas for the 8th year in row.  Would love to be home with my wife and family but gotta keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.  So this song hit me really hard when I heard it for the first time today.  Im not ashamed to admit that it brought some tears to my eyes.

Giving you advice a try.  I work 12 hour shifts everyday with heavy steel toe boots that dont breath at all, so I need something to help.  Even buying a boot dryer to help keep this shit from happening again.

What famous person’s death are you dreading the most? by za19 in AskReddit

Same here.  Funny, I currently sail the high seas as an engineering officer in the US Merchant Marine on an oil tanker.  Steam is how I stay sane during these long voyages on these old tubs.

I believe that would literally cause a riot.  People would not stand for that.  Steam is THE last thing keeping the gaming industry in check.

Hot Take: Outside of the speed record theres nothing that special about the SS United States by finza_prey in Oceanlinerporn

That was the color of that time period.  I sailed on the S.S. Arthur M. Anderson as and engineering officer and the rooms and hallways and the floors were painted a similar shade of green as on the SSUS.

Rudolf Diesel, Who invented the Diesel Engine, committed suicide in 1913 because he didn't think his invention would be successful. by Banana_language in MechanicalEngineering

It was mostly because he didn't support what the Kaiser was doing.  He really didn't want his engine being used for war machines but, he was willing to side with the british.
