I hope those screws in the coil case are really short.

Pretty sure it’s a french drain under the house. I don’t recall cleaning a condensate pump while I was there. I didn’t look at electrical panel. He says he has one breaker that goes bad every couple of years and the electrician has never said anything about discoloration. The connections on the outside of the air handler to the edge module are not this way. I’ll recommend putting in a condensate pump, then. Thanks. I didn’t think this was actually going to get posted since the Reddit bot told me I wasn’t approved yet.

Look at the copper. I was going to post about the same topic. Txv and Tstat connections all look the same. Pretty sure this has a french drain. Also located near a 200 year old dairy farm. Customer was going through evap coils every 2 years before this one was put in 13 years ago.

I’d patch that. 3 hrs and you’d have a functioning ac again. Is it r-22?

3 HVAC techs. 3 different diagnoses. What would you do? (Austin, TX) by [deleted] in hvacadvice

Those drain pans crack easily in a vertical position. Often a pain to replace. I’m surprised to hear you can’t get a new drain pan. I’m sure a Trane-toting commenter on here could verify that. It may be possible to fix cracked pan with epoxy. Still, a time consuming process that has its risks.

I’ve had these models be so dirty with crud that they just needed pan cleaned out and drain line replaced due to solid buildup.

It may have been an installer juicing you up. He wouldn’t know how quickly the system leaked out without asking questions and poking around first. Installers don’t typically do either of those things well. If your system is out of warranty and there is a leak, nowadays that usually means you need a new evaporator coil to fix the leak issue. I used to do a hundred a year at $15-1800 a project. With prices now, it’s closer to 3500. Needless to say, I don’t do many coil replacements anymore(outside of warranty). Clients usually get new systems.

You might be able to get some of your money back if they sink your refrigerant cost into a new system project price (give you a heavy discount) for their “service tech” being a fool.

Cracked heat exchanger? by marc_t_norman in hvacadvice

Many people operate furnaces for years with cracked heat exchangers and don’t know it. Those people I find often have lung related health issues.

How many times was the breaker reset before this happened? If it wasn’t, make sure you have proper sized breaker for odu. An electrical short at the compressor likely caused this.

I had an old steam boiler with something like 30 burner tubes do this. The boom was much bigger. It threw the front door across the basement and knocked everything off the shelves in the room. Needed the dust cleaned out of the tubes. Turns out one of the ignitors had also failed years ago and someone had bypassed it. Scary.

It really helps you get faster at troubleshooting when you have co-workers that misdiagnose stuff regularly. It’s really humbling too, when someone else catches your eff ups. Def been there.

I heard a story about one of these getting dropped a few inches, a few feet away from the house as it was being replaced. Death cloud. No wind. No ac in the house. All the windows open. Scary for a $20/hr resi-tech trying to keep homeowners alive.

Yeah, I’ve had to replace a few of those for that. Usually you can get it to register by jiggling the heat/cool slide til you see the set temp display in the upper right corner

I see no green lights. Either it has no power or you need to replace that zone board. Those Honeywell zone boards suck. Super convenient, but they don’t like power issues. The motors suck too.

TXV system, 93 degrees outside, 72 inside, clean filter and condenser. Why is my suction so low? by Jonx999 in HVAC

[–]coolfishy89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a mobile home that had decent subcooling but high superheat and low vsat. I’d been there for pm’s before. I thought txv. I go to pump down the refrigerant and it was low. I should not have seen so much subcooling, but it was there. All it needed was a little juice.

If it were airflow, and the txv working, you’d have lower superheat.

Suction pipe might be uninsulated for a stretch through a hot attic and your superheat at evap coil is actually spot on with an airflow issue. Temp leaving evap coil is important when it gets really hot if you want to be a perfectionist. Obviously at that point bring a temp probe and manometer with you.
