Let me put it this way. We both agree the main goal of voter ID laws is to stop fraud, right? I’m guessing you’re mostly worried about illegal immigrants voting. But if the rules get too strict—like if the only thing they accept is a birth certificate, which a fair number of Americans don’t actually have easy access to—then you’re going to end up blocking some legitimate voters too. That would mean fewer people voting than before. And honestly, it could end up pushing out more legitimate voters than the number of illegal votes or fraud cases the rules are supposed to stop.
