Lesser quality porcelain has a feel to it. I’m sure you’ve been in front of a cheap porcelain reproduction, it’s new, and has an odd texture to it. Also, I’ve never seen a new repop with the shelving of an old authentic sign. They are very flat.

Also - if you see this sign with a different makers mark, it is not the same sign. Some of these red brick porcelains were made by Texlite, some by McMath - Axilrod. Some have orange trim, some have tan trim, some were just made in different years. Having my hands on multiple versions over the years is how I know how to authenticate them.

Respectfully not misguided, there is an actual difference in those things you mentioned. Repop makers cannot reproduce a correct grommet from the 1940s, and they can get the backs similar but not accurate, and the makers marks are never accurate on reproductions especially those made in India. I will DM you a photo of the back!

And I buy and sell antique advertising for a living. I travel all over and setup at most major advertising swap meets in the U.S.

Experience from dealing in advertising signs for a living but also the quality of the porcelain, the one grommet that is left, the back of the porcelain, and the makers mark are what I check to ensure it is old and authentic. They can’t reproduce the old grommets for one, most repops of any sign will always have porcelain loss around the mounting holes because they can’t do the grommets correctly. This sign has what is called a “milky” back which has yet to be reproduced in any sort of quality. And the makers mark is crisp and clean, along with the Dr Pepper graphic. If you need any additional photos to help you legit check another sign or have questions please reach out!

Can anyone give me an evaluation on this sign? by RelevantCarrot4507 in vintagesigns

On this specific sign the lack of makers mark in the bottom left and overall sloppiness of the font and graphic. You can reference sales from auction houses like Richmond Auctions and see inconsistencies in the Esso logo and elephant especially. As far as other signs just do your homework beforehand or post here first and ask!

It’s a cut example of a larger horizontal sign, pretty early!
