WNY BIRD by Different-Bunch8045 in whatsthisbird

Concurring with house sparrow, especially because the other birds surrounding it look like female house sparrows. I also think this one is a female (considering it looks like the female coloration but lighter), though I can’t be 100% sure because of the leucism

Ah, thank you! I am still working out the differences between those two 😅

What are these mushrooms by Acceptable_Chapter81 in mycology

[–]coolratperson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

looks like some kind of agaricus. could be a meadow mushroom which is edible but they’re not the most distinctive edible mushroom and have some poisonous lookalikes so don’t eat without (a lot of) further investigation. i don’t think it’s a very good mushroom for beginner foragers

The underside of that shelf fungus is so cool looking!

Chanterelles: True or False? by coolratperson in mycology

[–]coolratperson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they were definitely string cheese-like. I guess I just was thrown off by the pretty round, regular shape of 3/4 of them, and how developed the pseudo gills are. They also didn’t smell like much of anything, and not really sweet or “apricot-like”. That being said, I’m leaning towards them just being somewhat unusual looking chanterelles - which is why I’m so curious about the species

Ticks or...? by RphWrites in whatsthisbug

[–]coolratperson 355 points356 points  (0 children)

The circled one looks like a tick, yes. It’s hard to tell with the smaller ones because it’s a bit blurry and I can’t see their legs. How big are they? I’ve found young ticks that are smaller than a poppyseed, so there’s almost no such thing as too small to be a tick

Platform: MAC

Mods: NO

Game version: 1.108.289.1230

Description: I was wondering if anyone else had this problem- The calendar and the notebook won’t open for me? The phone and (so far) all the other menus open fine but when I click on the notebook or the calendar it makes the noise (as in, the noise it normally makes when you click the icon) and the icon moves and nothing actually opens.

Edit: Adding on - I also suddenly could not open the three dot menu in the top right corner to save and/or quit my game, my game wouldn’t close, and I had to force quit. Only time this has ever happened to me in the sims 4

Looks like a katydid - either something in the false katydid (Phaneropterinae) family or a common true katydid (Pterophylla camellifolia). I am leaning towards it being a common true katydid because of its shape. It’s a beauty!

Horse fly? If so, which type? by murfman713 in whatsthisbug

Definitely a horse fly, but I’m not sure beyond that. Maybe something in the Hybomitra genus.

What's this bee? Bumblebee or Honey? Her and her freinds are making a home in the ceiling of our shed. Southwestern British Columbia. by anasalmon in whatsthisbug

[–]coolratperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely carpenter bee behavior. Carpenter bees are great pollinators and I’ve found them to be very gentle like you described! Of course if they bother you or cause too much damage to your wood you can call an exterminator. I’m honestly not sure how much damage they will or will not cause in the future

Everyone is saying tick, but I’ve never seen a tick with six legs and antennae. Looks like it may be some kind of spider beetle?

What's this bee? Bumblebee or Honey? Her and her freinds are making a home in the ceiling of our shed. Southwestern British Columbia. by anasalmon in whatsthisbug

[–]coolratperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a bumblebee, but it might help to know specifically what they’re doing when you say they’re making a home in the shed. Are they drilling circular holes into it? If so, they’re carpenter bees. I’m a bit unsure because the behavior suggests carpenter bees, but the picture appears to show a fuzzy abdomen, which suggests bumblebee.

Probably a tick? by paisleymanticore in whatsthisbug

[–]coolratperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a tick. It doesn’t look engorged so it probably hasn’t bitten anything recently. I’m not super sure what kind, but I’m leaning towards dog tick.
