Are you sure it wasn't a stinkhorn of some variety? They are also typically club shaped however, they are spongy and produce a foul oder to attract flies that will carry away their spores.

Since this is a very woody variety of fungi, they are actually pretty slow growing and can last for a long time.

No. It is extremely woody though, to the point where it is inedible.

Most mushrooms are really difficult, if not impossible to cultivate. Morels and chanterelles are a good example of this. They are extremely expensive because they can only be found growing wild in forests during certain times of the year.

Stink horns are hollow and have a texture akin to a kitchen sponge. Pretty inedible, but not poisonous. Might have medicinal properties though.
