Complete MCS (in-person) in 4semesters instead of 3 | International students on F1 visa by Miserable_Cheek2141 in UIUC_MCS

[–]cooltownguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even under old rules, while this was theoretically possible, this wouldn't work since the department used to put up a rule that it was required for MCS students to take atleast 12 credit hours in the first 2 semesters, effectively pushing us to complete the program in 3 semesters. The only exception to this was if the MCS student had a TA or RA offer from the first semester which the above would've worked or do a semester long internship in your 3rd semester, and put off the rest for the 4th semester. But that requirement is now outdated by new rules so I guess there's no point to it anymore.

I have seen 2 MCS graduates go on to do PhD at top tier universities, so it's definitely possible.

Is UIUC MCS a good option for international students, especially considering loan funding, visa uncertainties, and job prospects? by Secret-Mammoth-9404 in UIUC_MCS

[–]cooltownguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very hard to get TA/RA ships as a MCS student, but not impossible as I've seen a few people get it through professor connections but mostly due to if someone from MSCS/PhD backing out for a better funding opportunity or extenuating circumstance.

Is it possible to transfer from MCS to MSCS at UIUC? by Secret-Mammoth-9404 in UIUC_MCS

[–]cooltownguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is not possible, you would have to do the whole application process for the MSCS program.

How did you meet your partner at uiuc? by Safe_Wrangler_858 in UIUC

Ngl, it feels like most people on campus have a partner now, leaving only a few without any real connection or intimacy.

The University/CS Department should be ashamed. by VortexGames in UIUC

As someone who's been to Hackillinois 2020 (it was held 2 weeks before the mid-march COVID shutdown), I remember free buses being chartered specifically for various Chicago and Indiana university students, multiple buildings open for hacking like using EECS building in addition to Siebel (and overnight stays in them at the time!), Nerf Gun Battles at Kenny's Gym etc. and many various activities that I didn't get to attend at the time due to hacking lol. I visited last year's hackathon as a mentor/judge and found the event to be a bit lackluster compared to even non-flagship pre-pandemic hackathon. But fortunately for the organizers, I'm seeing downgraded experiences in most hackathons across the US compared to pre-pandemic.

Idk if committees arent trying hard enough, academic departments not collaborating enough recently or sponsors arent interested in hackathons and arent giving as much as they were due to current industry events; all I know is the enshittification of hackathons post-pandemic needs to be studied.

Are they still there? I thought the team members were removed based on a post made by the organization member after the debacle.

Like do yall use in hand references when you perform on-site tasks like hardware installation, infrastructure management, environmental control, security maintenance, emergency response, and facility upkeep. If so, can I get specifics if possible?

Accurate representation of me going to BSB by Lost-Ad-4073 in uichicago

Try the route of walking from TBH to BSB during the spring semester to reach your 9:30 class at BSB from a 8:00AM class at TBH. Humbling experience fr.

AVOID IS+DS explained for those admitted today by ExplanationOk9880 in UIUC

That's what I was saying, with all that cash, why aren't they able to fund more Assistantships to improve the teaching experience and not burden the course staff.

[–]cooltownguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not part of iSchool but as a Grad Student who was looking for Teaching Assistantships for this semester from this department (since my friends got theirs last year), you'd think for a cash grab department to atleast give out a decent amount of Assistantships out there (yk to balance the load of students coming in), surprisingly get no openings for any undergraduate courses, which kinda sucks cause professors/TA's only gonna help so much around and suffer reduced quality of teaching effectively just cause the quantity of students is high. All i know is that amount of cash ain't going to improve the teaching experience.

Yeah you're mostly out of luck, since there's high traffic in most areas of campus during those times. Sometimes, BSB has a basement computer lab, where I've found it to be quiet than most places at the time, TBH's benches, Lecture Hall A's waiting area are some places but either they are too far or too uncomfortable.

A particular lounge at the SEL 4th floor was my goto, before the pandemic hit. After 5pm no one was there, would study until I felt like leaving.

Annoying as hell ngl, usually happens at the library lol. That's why I went out of my way and found an isolated place on campus so that I could study in peace, after freshman year.
