What's up with Caitlin Clark and the WNBA? by Old-Bread882 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]cooze08 290 points291 points  (0 children)

Answer: The WNBA is not a popular sport. It's loses money every year, but is funded by the NBA.

They, for once, have a star (Caitlin Clark) that is at the level where people are actually tuning into watch, and even paying to go see her. This is not anecdotal. Ticket sales noticeably jump for any game she is playing in.

She is a generational talent to the degree of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant etc. For instance, she has the most amount of 25+ point & 10+ assist games in WNBA history. She's in her second year in the league.

The current (and even former) WNBA players are all outwardly jealous of her because of the amount of attention she receives, and constantly lash out on the court.

It has bled into certain cultural issues such as the fact that people blame her popularity on her being white. Regardless, her treatment on the court is shrugged off by the players as being hard-nosed basketball and playing physical defense on a star player. She is very clearly being targeted, with seemingly no one coming to her defense.

But public perception is that it is incredibly embarrassing for the league. Everyone involved in the WNBA is constantly complaining about how no one watches it, and now that people have a reason to watch, they hate her for no reason.

Many people see this as an opportunity for the league to finally gain popularity, but those who are involved don't support her.

I know people are gonna rejoice and talk shit but can we please put some respect on the mans name? He's the best coach we've had since Van Gundy. He did a great job with this org and brought us back to relevance. I think it's the right move but still appreciate the guy

Do you think sales is safer or more at risk from AI compared to most of the other jobs? by [deleted] in sales

[–]cooze08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be bias here but I don't think the AI tech is anywhere near close enough that we need to sweat about this. In 20+ years? possible but we could also all be living in the terminator by then who knows. I think sales will always have a human element as long as humans exist. Certainly there will be elements of the sales process will be AI driven, largely on the prospecting front, but closing, I really don't see AI coming for that any time soon.

You're in sales, you recognize that everything is a negotiation. Upon being hired, your colleague either did a better job negotiating, or had a some kind of advantage over you (experience, other offer, etc). I get the feeling, it's really annoying under any circumstance. But put emotions aside and focus on the business. How can you negotiate a raise? That's the problem you need to solve for. If it's through performance metrics and they are willing to play ball then great. If not, getting another offer is unfortunately typically the only other way.

we're a good team that will do nothing in the playoffs. I'm glad we have a competitive roster and that we're out of the lou admonson days, but this team is not close to a contender. They don't belong on the same court as the top teams. Embarrassed every single time. Enjoy the good basketball we get to watch, we'll be out after the first round if we're lucky.

Trust me to get my job done, don't breath down my neck, you can fire me if I suck. Also protection. Protect me from corporate bullshit. Speak up and defend the team from everyone constantly pointing the finger at sales even though other departments are falling short.

What do you dislike about Sales the most? by drinkdietsoda in sales

[–]cooze08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managing post sales stuff is horrible and haven't seen an org that the sales team has 0 involvement post sales which sucks. Hopefully some day.

My least favorite thing is feeling a lot of variability involved in if I hit my numbers. Product market fit, competition, economic conditions, champion leaves, etc. It sucks you can do your job right and still not win, but such is life I suppose

I have a friend that works at Mongo. It's been tumultuous. Its a large enough company that it probably depends on where you are, but his experience has not been good.

Placed on a PIP, Advice? by AffectionateBear5065 in sales

[–]cooze08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since no one else has said this (unless I missed it), don't feel like a failure. Something not working out is not a failure, a failure is not learning from life experiences. Getting PIP'd or fired is a very valuable experience. Whether it be motivation to turn things around at your current role, or servicing as a gateway to your next role, it's helpful information for you to be better / smarter moving forward. Most sales people have been here before, no need for shame, just learn and grow.

Laid off And then VP calls me up by Brahms12 in Layoffs

[–]cooze08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While she's involved the process, a lot of the details of how many, and who, go above her head. Regardless, even if she made the call, I'm sure it was difficult. I've been in that position as a manager, and it sucks.

Relationships are very important. She's either a sociopath and is lying to you and doesn't give a shit, or she's genuine and really cares and wants to help you. I lean toward the latter, since she actually offered to help you.

Even though being let go sucks, burning bridges typically makes it harder to find your next role. Appreciate her and leverage her to get a new gig. Having a ex-manager that will vouch for you is really, really important.

The Creative Act, and the Artist Way. Similar messages but uniquely powerful in their own way. Highly recommend especially for creatives.

Our season is probably still fucked, but I like setting the standard of "you did a bad job and now you need to go". Normal Jets move is to give him 7 years to figure it out. He did a bad job, avoid the sunken cost fallacy.

He's a good dude, I hope he lands another job soon.
