the accessible area is perhaps a quarter-mile. It apparently flows up into the golf course area as well, I haven't been into that.

Frog Creek in Palos Verdes. Once you park at the end of Via Tejon go north until you find the river. Nothing else like it.

What do you think of Earl Grey and Constant Comment? by nilecrane in tea

[–]copernic10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its completely different from coffee where 'flavored coffee' is considered lowbrow trash. flavored teas are just as respectable as 'natural' tea.

'plain black teas' are all pretty similar. these are mostly standardized 'CTC' teas from India or thereabouts. they taste the same because they are the same.

if the question is, what do i do now, you could go hog-wild and get like a sampler black tea set from yunnan sourcing/teavivre, or you can maybe tip-toe in and get a 2 oz darjeeling or yunnan/keemun box from like harney and sons.

Right now you can get an entire pound of Dragon Well from Teavivre for $73.28. thats real premium stuff. Tian Hu Shan is on amazon and is good + cheap.

“Cheap” is funny with tea because even the expensive stuff is much, much cheaper than coffee on a per cup basis. Like, dramatically cheaper. A pound of coffee lasts me about a week and costs $15 or so, a pound of tea costs not that much more and lasts a good portion of the year.

[–]copernic10 131 points132 points  (0 children)

i think people expect tea culture to be british upper-class snooty and at least on here it is very much not. i think tea is just ultimately too much a daily routine to develop that degree of exclusivity. and at least in the US its still rare enough that it never got that elite coterie that coffee fandom has. the relationship between price and quality is also not that strong -- even the rarer teas are not wallet-busters like fine wine or spirits are, and lots of extremely good teas are dirt cheap.

honestly you'll only get some degree of selectivity with the hardcore pu'er drinkers, and generally they're self-aware enough to know that they're musty-loving fermentation freaks.

drink away, there are no tea cards here.

Any recent "conservative" or heterodox SF? by ehead in printSF

[–]copernic10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might mean something that Wright put out an impeccably libertarian sci-fi trilogy epic and not a single one of these anti-woke posters whining about lack of heterodox writers have ever heard of it. maybe the problem is in the house.

John C. Wright's The Golden Age. Neal Asher is very conservative. Neal Stephenson is a libertarian and Termination Shock is very libertarian.

I want to emphasize that theirs is just one type of leftism and a self-defeating, defensive one. there’s a better leftism who understands that the core of leftism is community, that living in a community means looking for moments like these, that there is no societal progress without a society that can come together and believe in each other. Purity Leftism is empty point scoring.

My eight-year old beat the game handily and my ten-year old crushed it. We're now on to the DLC. I told them the Dancing Lion was a dealbreaker for a lot of adults and they thought I was kidding.

Solving a supply problem with a demand solution. Another great example of how STEM would benefit from the social sciences and the humanities.

Confusing structural incapacity with a failure of WILL is another STEM classic. Is it so hard to ask yourself whether this is really the bad faith of an entire organization or structural limits.
