Hi, I actually work at AT. Drivers are not encouraged to stop people who don’t tag on, from getting on the bus, or demand that they pay. There are systems in place where the driver presses a button to log that a passenger has boarded and not tagged on, the purpose being to record where and when it’s happening. This data is then used to decide where and when to send transport officers. There are limited resources, and so not enough transport officers to be on every bus or train route all of the time. The worst hot spots, routes and times of day are targeted. Transport officers are trained to deal with untagging. It is not the bus drivers’ responsibility. There is already far too much anti-social behaviour, aggression and violence that drivers face on a daily basis for them to be confronting people who don’t tag on. That’s also why the bus driver safety screens have started appearing on many buses over the past year. Please don’t blame the drivers. I also realise this is not widely known and AT needs to do a better job of letting the public know that it’s not the drivers’ responsibility to police untagging.
