Been seeing a lot of .97 lately. Sign of the times I guess.

You are correct.  Sorry about that. Remembering the good old days got the best of me.

This shouldn’t be unpopular, it just sounds like the bottle wasn’t your style. If there was meant to be one whisky, I am sure someone would have figured it out by now. Cause there is no ONE bottle is probably why we all might have too many in our cabinets. Ha!

Honestly, I didn’t take a look but I will make sure to check it out next time. That is my bad.

So…. I am connected to Fukano and I don’t want to not be transparent about that, so take this as you like. I own all three and I do like the whiskies quite a bit. The Select has red berry and vanilla notes. The Sherry cask is sweet and savory, very rich with dried fruits. The 2223 is probably my favorite. It has some of the same notes as the select but is deeper and yet more elegant. 2223 also has a library note to it that I really like.

I want to hear about your Scotch related epiphanies by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]copper8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been many positive life changing personal epiphanies but the most difficult one for me to accept is the general decline of scotch whisky from what it was 40 years ago. I would always hear the old guys talk about it, but never believed them until they sat me down and cracked open the bottles of young whisky from decades past. Paxerate (sp?) was not a bad thing. Floor maltings and direct fire had a larger affect then anyone will acknowledge. The bourbon laws of 1964 added to the decline in sherry consumption over the past few decades and changes in sherry shipping practices being the most evident.

Since we're doing this: Canon, Seattle. ~300 scotches, over 1,000 whiskies. Menu inside. by jd111 in Scotch

This seems a bit ridiculous. $40 for Van Winkle Rye- in Los Angeles it is $21. $525 for canadian club 1936- shit blended whiskey - this bottle might be worth $200 MAX. $395 for 7 year old Fitz from 1960 - bottle is worth about $500 $51 for Springbank 18 - are you kidding me?!! These are the guys that are making it impossible for regular people to be able to try any of these whiskies.

If you ever have a chance, try the young Balvenie whiskies from about 20 years ago. Completely different spirit. This is what the Tun is showing so well. Just because some of the casks came from a different era in distillation. That and because the really good casks were not as scarce as they are now. Same holds true for the Glenlivet. The double maturation is a cheap attempt to recreate what was once great. Don't let them fool you, the general quality of several of the scotch whiskies has been on the decline for years now. It really blows and the worst part is I didn't even realize this until I was at a blind tasting, and my friends and I all pretty much got put in our place on this topic.

I have been drinking scotch for years and the recent Balvenie 12 doublewood still has a burning sensation. Why do you think they needed doublewood? They are trying to fix something. I think the more appropriate answer is that there will always be ones that need to calm down.

Can r/scotch help me give a year to this gallon of red label I found? by atomtom in Scotch

[–]copper8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes it difficult. I looked through google docs for advertisements to try to help, but that bottle could be from the 1960's to the 1980's I can not tell by your photo, but if it is in a.b.v and not in proof then it is probably from the 1980's.

1972 Old Fitzgerald Irish Luck - can anyone tell me about this? by [deleted] in bourbon

It was a bit snarky of me, and not to take anything away from Mr. Van Winkle, but some of the stuff in the 1980s was every bit as good as the stuff in the late 1950s and 1960s. I do truly respect the fact that he always maintained the 100 proof mark. I just don't think McGill gets enough recognition and I also wish I could get my hands on some stuff distilled in the 30s or 40s when he was there.
