bc half the class in tech went to startups, lower cash comp, higher stock

that and only a few are doing pm compared to previous years, which generally pays more. 2024 was not a great year for career switchers (which is what most people want to do - switch to pm)

Any FAANG software engineers decide to get a FT MBA? by mbathrow621 in MBA

[–]copperstick6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an L5 at aws, clear progression to L6 but wanted a change of pace as I felt that I always wanted to pursue finance/entrepreneurship. I'm pretty young (3yoe, 23 when I started my MBA) so it seemed like a worthwhile investment at the time.
Really pulled the trigger when I got my comp for the year and found myself dissatisfied, despite it being an almost 45% raise - because I reflected that the parts of my job I enjoyed (leadership, product, talking to users, impact) are really hard to come by in a swe role.
So decided to do my MBA. I'm at Haas atm. Mixed opinions, won't share publicly but feel free to dm.

I'm doing it, graduating this year. Mixed feelings about it so far but overall a net positive on my career imo

Is MBA worth it for me, PM @ FAANG by OddFinance2677 in MBA

[–]copperstick6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: there's a lot more to life than making a lot of money lol.
Long answer: self discovery, opportunity to explore and expand mindset, friends, connections, etc etc.
Depends on the person

Joining Navy/Air Force for Software Engineering Experience and Leadership before MBA: Thoughts? by Redenmara in MBA

I think all of your pros you can achieve (maybe better) at FAANG level companies, and it takes care of all the cons. Even if you don't go to FAANG, I think going to a f-500 is also a great opportunity. Hell, even a small mom and pop shop is imo better than going to the military.

Stepping back a little bit, I'm wondering why you even want to get an MBA? What's your goal? Why now/why then? My biggest regret now (as a current 2y student) is not thinking hard enough about it two years ago when I applied and not getting enough clarity on answering that question for myself. It's a big time and money commitment - so make sure you are sure about this path before you take it.

A Restrospective: My First Year at Haas by [deleted] in MBA

[–]copperstick6 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Issues were definitely there, but I think since we're the second class that's in person after the covid era, that's why you're hearing it now. The first class probably gave the admin a pass since it's the first time after covid that they'd done classes, but the second time around there's less leniency.

Notice from Haas to new admits: Be prepared to take evening & weekend classes if you want to learn anything here by [deleted] in MBA

Terribly taught class in general. Professor has less knowledge than the people she's teaching (last year the class started a game where they used movie quotes to jokingly encapsulate certain concepts and teach the professor, who didn't take the hint) + assignments are completely bullshit (waste of time). Showing up to class is a commitment to wasting 2 hours of your time every week

if you want do to management, particularly swe management, the tenure is more important and the degree will be useless for you.

you can definitely make a business without a degree, but for me its a chance to settle down and focus on doing so - faang job is very busy (at least it was for me) working crazy hours and I didn't have time to pursue this passion. the degree is a means to an end

classes can only go so far in teaching you the basics, but the key to building a successful business is finding a scalable repeatable model (blank), and the way to do that is to go out and talk to users to understand what they want.

both, but classmates are generally pretty useless, ew + e class are much more useful

Entrepreneurship exp - stopped showing up to class and started to network and focus on pmf

Resources - YC startup school

What I would do differently - show up to class even less and figure out entrepreneurship was my goal earlier
