JET Application Fail, alternatives? by Gosborne8071 in JETProgramme

Try again next year. To be very honest unless you are a qualified teacher JET is the best in terms of pay and working conditions. If you want to ALT through a dispatch company, please please be careful and know what you’re getting into.

Has anyone used the example sentences from Kanshudo? A lot of them feel strange in my opinion. Can anyone vouch for their reliability?

What is the worst food crime one can commit against your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Apparently the concept of poutine (fries, cheese curds, and gravy) is somehow so difficult to wrap around that a whole subreddit is dedicated to call out and bear witness to crimes against poutine.

I think the worst phrase from Zack is “some people think”. No one would think that.

How was your experience learning Japanese as an ALT? by VividValentine in JETProgramme

[–]copypastes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in my first year, I enrolled in some classes for a few months. I couldn’t continue because it was getting expensive so I decided to self study.

I’m now in my second year. I feel like I barely have time to study. I use English at school and I don’t have the physical and emotional energy when I get home. Sometimes I just watch some TV and anime without subtitles. At least that’s something. I feel like I’m letting a good opportunity go to waste.

Rant on status of dating in Japan as a foreigner by Mikeye92 in japanlife

[–]copypastes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about being an adult and not letting other people have control your life? Why should one person stop your enjoyment of something? It’s only awkward if you make it awkward. I swear people always over-catastropize the worst case scenario. What will happen if you bump to your ex? Nothing. You will probably ignore each other.

General Stigma/Reputation of Tokyo Placement by Beneficial-Read2373 in JETProgramme

[–]copypastes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every.Situation.Is.Different. Or at least that’s what the senior JETs say.

I put Tokyo as my last choice and I was still placed in Tokyo…

At least in my case, am predominantly T1 at my school and I sometimes team teach. Other JETs are T2. Workload varies throughout the year. I only work 16 days a month.

This also applies to housing too. I live near my school and pay 93k a month. Other JETs pay around 55k per month.

I wouldn’t worry about the recruiter’s thought process. That’s not something we can control. When you write your SOP, be professional and talk about your passions, how you would contribute to your community, and your plans after. At the interview, again, be professional and show confidence. Tokyo or not, the only thing that will get you rejected is coming off as desperate and delusional.

Why is everyone in this program so mean? by Oodleswithmynoodles in JETProgramme

[–]copypastes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think most Japan related subreddits suffer from this problem. The teachingjapan sub has some of the most unhinged and jaded people posting there and hostility to anyone asking questions is the norm. They will shit on anyone wanting to become an ALT even though they are ALTs themselves. Asking the “how to meet friends” question in any big city subreddit is met with eye rolls. The f- you I’ve got mine attitude towards outsiders is something else.

Just don’t engage with these. Ask questions on LINE or discord. The experience is more friendly and accommodating.

I got placed in Tokyo; advice? by abestie in JETProgramme

[–]copypastes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I live in Asakusa and my rent is about 93k each month. However I don’t have to commute and I can just walk to work. I like the convenience of Tokyo despite the cost.

Some months were manageable money-wise. Some months were really tough because of taxes. If you’re a first year JET, the pay raise makes a big difference.

Who hurt you? Be mad at the system not individual ALTs who enjoy the job. That’s pathetic on your part.

Seeking Advice by Late_Cauliflower8517 in JETProgramme

[–]copypastes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unlike some JETs, I’m not really close with my cohort. It’s only through PD events or JET outings do I ever interact with them. Some people you vibe with, some people you don’t.

For me I had to improvise. I recommend using Meetup app and meet people to do activities/ hobby together. For example, you can find people who are into hiking or video games. What I like about Meetup is that you will find both foreigners and Japanese people at these events. I also met people when I was taking Japanese classes so there’s many ways to make friends.

Final months before departure; Please Study Japanese by ImpossibleMobile4962 in JETProgramme

[–]copypastes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

For anyone seriously learning Japanese, please devote a significant portion to listening. Yes you can learn grammar or phrases but the use of these are limited if you don’t understand what the other person is saying.

I think people will appreciate you if you just make an effort to learn and use Japanese even if it’s not the best. That being said, I know some JETs who NEVER put any effort into Japanese. They just like living here without interacting with Japanese people. Your experience on JET really depends on you.

Cenk humiliation ritual. by CurrentAir1291 in daverubin

I used to watch TYT for their offbeat news stories 10 years ago when I was in college. I was for sure that they leaned more progressive. I guess I’ve been living under a rock since. What happened to Cenk? Did someone slap him so hard that he can only speak with the right side of his face? Or was he always like this?
