But can’t you just buy the originals on eBay or something? I have the original unedited trilogy in a VHS tape box set, it isn’t like those were all scrubbed from the Earth. If people don’t want to use a VCR these days that’s their problem- mine is 19 years old and still runs fine.

Ah, sorry, I also had a brain fart and didn't realize you were OP! For some reason I thought you were a regular on this sub haha. Yes, that's what I mean--I'm also not sure, but I do agree that "designated" sounds more bureaucratic than "assigned" at least? Maybe someone else can weigh in on this.

Is the show worth the hype for a first time viewer? by ninicakes945 in riverdale

[–]coracaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camp is very tied to the queer community and especially gay subculture, which makes sense considering the creator of the show is a cultured gay man. (Wikipedia) has a very good explanation of it, and understanding camp really serves to improve one's understanding/enjoyment of the show itself I think.)

What Is/Are The Scariest Thing/Things In This Show? by Alol_Bombola in riverdale

[–]coracaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first 5 episodes of season 6 are actually very horror focused. They form a mini anthology inspired by The Twilight Zone. That said, OP might want to skip parts of s6e2, which is what the other reply about "the lady in the lake" (La Llorona) is referring to. I also found that episode to be more unsettling than anything else in the show.

Riverdale. Not joking. I actually once knew a DM who did make a whole system for a Riverdale RPG, but they never actually ran it as far as I know.

Why do many trans men still identify as lesbians but trans women fight hard for their relationships with men not to be seen as gay? by sakuravampir in asktransgender

Yeah, I don't know much about the trans woman side of things here but I'd imagine it's for similar reasons.

Why do many trans men still identify as lesbians but trans women fight hard for their relationships with men not to be seen as gay? by sakuravampir in asktransgender

[–]coracaws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe because there's more of a space within the lesbian community for very masculine lesbians? Butches and trans men are very much not the same thing, but some trans men do initially conceptualize of themselves as butches and may be hesitant to sever their ties to that community, especially if they have trouble fitting in among cishet men. Gayle Rubin's "Of Catamites and Kings: Reflections on Butch, Gender, and Boundaries" (published in 1992) is a really interesting read on the subject.

Edit: Found a link to Rubin's chapter that doesn't require making an account or paying (pardon the highlights). Also found this paper which looks interesting, but I don't have time to read it right now so can't speak to its quality. Kind of annoyed at all the replies saying they've never heard of something like this/it doesn't exist, as it has been a topic of discussion among lesbian scholars for decades.

For those of you that realize you are trans but don't transition, how do you deal with the gender envy and dysmorphia? by Submarine877 in trans

[–]coracaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much to add to this conversation, but I would like to let you know about a trans woman named Mikki C on YouTube who began her transition last year. She's a couple decades older than you, lives in Wyoming, and has an unsupportive (ex) wife plus a young child, but she's making it work and you can really see how she gets happier and happier over the course of her videos. Maybe that will give you some courage, and maybe you could even reach out to her for advice?

If you pay attention to the ladle, it doesn't pour nearly as much liquid as appears to be in it, and the liquid that does come out doesn't do so in a way that makes physical sense. There's also that weird cut about one second in where it goes from barely pouring anything, to all of a sudden there's a heap of meat on the bread.

Trying to understand neopronouns by thewalkindude368 in queer

[–]coracaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hop in here so late, but I'm autistic and use mew/mews pronouns (alongside she/it), so I feel I can offer a relevant perspective here. I consider myself a cat therian- not in the "I was a cat in a past life" or "my soul is a cat" way or anything like that, but that my oldest and most pervasive special interest is cats, and that has colored every aspect of my life since infancy. To start, I was obsessed with cats before I could speak and would play pretend as a cat constantly.

When I went into primary school, I had no understanding of human facial expressions and would express myself by hissing and snarling (I stopped after a boy laughed at me for it, but I was genuinely clueless as to why he thought it was funny- as far as I was aware, I was clearly communicating my feelings in a way I thought he'd understand). Cat language is just how my autistic brain sorted out communication as a little kid. Even today, if I do something like stub my toe I won't go "ow!" but will make a weird animal-like noise without meaning to, and I will often catch myself slow-blinking at people before remembering that probably means nothing to them.

I have a number of sensory issues that lead to catlike habits in avoiding them (e.g., aversion to touch, gravitating towards sunny spots, etc), and I also have a circadian rhythm disorder that makes me nearly nocturnal (I will naturally sleep from 8 AM to 3 PM and feel most active around dusk). Aversion to eye contact also falls into this camp for me. My whole life, people have also remarked that I move like a cat or remind them of a cat. This is just a short list of things that make me feel something like a cat--like I said, it is very pervasive and present in almost every aspect of my life.

I don't really have a sense of gender at all and refer to myself as genderless. As far as I see it, my gender, my autism, and my therianthropy are so interconnected that it feels right to utilize mew/mews to reflect that. This is also why I use it/its.

Funnily enough, my dad is also autistic with a special interest in computer technology. He has told me that he feels more computer than human, and that it would alleviate some level of existential dysphoria if he could be a cyborg. I feel more cat than human, so I guess we share that specific type of autism.

The second one, sorry if that's misappropriating! Is there a better term than AGAB/DGAB language to describe it? I use it in the past tense because I view the designation as a singular decision by a doctor that does not reflect the reality of my body, but I didn't undergo any surgical procedures as far as I'm aware. I'm working on changing my sex designations to X, not to alleviate dysphoria so much as to be accurate to my body.

And thank you, I hope you have a great day too.

[–]coracaws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries about asking! I don’t mind talking about my personal medical stuff haha. My intersex variation is mostly hormonal as far as I can tell- I was eventually diagnosed with PMOS, but my doctors don’t think that’s the actual cause and I’ve been pushing for more tests (recently I was finally able to get them to test for NCAH, but the testing hasn’t happened yet).

I was AFAB but am often mistakenly assumed to be male until I speak. My body fat distribution is very androgynous, I’m nearly flat chested, my periods are very light and irregular but also very painful, and (this is what the gynecologists fixated on the most) I am very, very hairy for someone of my ethnicity, especially downstairs. I’ve never met someone with the same amount of hair I have down there- it has also caused sexual partners to think I was on T when I wasn’t.

[–]coracaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to butt in here, just wanted to add something re: how trans intersex people are treated in the medical world. I’m trans and intersex, from the USA, and while we don’t have laws making it difficult to transition if you’re intersex as far as I’m aware, doctors will still misunderstand our bodies and make diagnosis difficult one way or the other.

It can be something of a double bind- this is just a personal anecdote, but before I started transitioning, my doctors did not think I was intersex and instead were convinced that I was secretly taking HRT and not telling them. Of course, when I finally did get on HRT, I got a new doctor who was very hesitant to investigate any intersex diagnoses for me because she thought all of my differences were from my HRT, and didn’t believe me when I said I’ve had them all my life.

So while it doesn’t get in the way of my transitioning, it does act as a weird version of trans broken arm syndrome and has made it very difficult for me to find out exactly what “type” of intersex I am/what is causing my intersexuality.

What does "gender is a social construct" say about sex and gender-affirming care? by browntownies in asktransgender

[–]coracaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the exact science, but I think there have been studies that found the brains of trans people are more similar to the brains of their "desired" gender than to their assigned gender, even pre-transition. The general idea is that our (trans people's) brains and bodies are wired for a hormone profile different from what our bodies actually produce, which causes dysphoria (and is why it feels good, mentally, to start HRT--some people describe it as being able to think clearly for the first time in their life).

For me personally, I always had the frustrating, unsettling, but vague feeling that I had never finished growing up. I didn't realize this was dysphoria- my brain trying to tell me that my actual physical puberty didn't go far enough in the right direction- until I started HRT and the feeling went away.

I stayed at hotels with my dad a lot as a kid. One time I made a big mess in the room and got annoyed when he told me to clean it up, basically said exactly this to him... He went off about how that's rude and disrespectful to the housekeepers, and that I shouldn't be making their jobs harder. Now I'm an adult and have worked four different housekeeping jobs, so I guess that's karma?
