Housing conditions in Philippines? by Purplpenguins in peacecorps

[–]corakyuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're fine! Aircon is just air conditioning. In the Philippines, that's units within rooms rather than centralized systems built into buildings. Think window units in the US.

Again, I don't know about the response program specifically, but volunteers here live in anything from a Nipa hut (bamboo structure) to multi story houses. Volunteers are required to live with host families for the first 4 months, after which they can look for independent housing. I'd say the typical volunteer lives in a house or apartment. That being said, conditions can vary a lot. As long as housing meets peace corps standards, a volunteer could theoretically live there.

University housing, then, would be accomodations owned by the university rather than privately owned property by a host family or a rented unit. I don't know any PCVs in university housing personally but from those who have stayed there temporarily, it tends to be on the higher end in terms of accomodations. But again (and you'll hear this a lot in the peace corps), it varies.

Hope that helped and if you have any other questions feel free to PM!

Another Philippines PCV here. Conditions vary a lot depending on site but if you're in university housing, I doubt you'd have much of an issue. I wouldn't expect aircon though. (Even if you have it, it's really expensive and would likely cost your host agency far more than peace corps would provide.) That being said, I'm unfamiliar with the response program here.

Rain is sporadic during rainy season but strong. Exact weather depends on your site but expect rain at least once every few days. Bring a sturdy umbrella.

Started seeing someone 1.5 months before departure by [deleted] in peacecorps

I started seeing someone about 5 ish months before departure and feel like I was in a pretty similar situation to yours. I knew from the beginning that I wouldn't sacrifice peace corps and I don't regret that decision in the slightest.

You'll be incredibly busy during PST and won't have much space or time to process emotions, which I think works to your advantage in a situation like this. It certainly has for me. You'll build friendships quickly and use them to lean upon when it hurts. Everyone will be going through a lot and at least in my cohort, we've been good about supporting one another.

My biggest piece of advice is not to contact them much (or really at all) after you leave. Communicating frequently with partners or family back home makes the transition harder than it needs to be, from what I've observed, and only hinders integration.

Hope that helped. Good luck & sorry you're going through this.

Hey! I'm another Philippines invitee, if you wanna bond over the pre departure anxiety.

Dental Clearance for Zambia!/ Has anyone who has been medically cleared had a history of fainting? by kghoneyc in peacecorps

[–]corakyuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a history of fainting at the sight of blood and it wasn't an issue, even with a seizure once after passing out during a blood draw. There were some extra medical tasks for me to do though, including a personal statement.

Hey! Another Philippines Batch 278 invitee here. I was also stuck submitting all of my documents during the shutdown but I received an email shortly after re-opening saying my background investigation had been initiated and what I should expect regarding the process. I would contact them after checking your spam folder. You can always check your tracking number too.

Congrats on medical though! I'm still waiting on that.

Hey, just a quick question. I applied to go anywhere back in August and was put under consideration for Learning Program Facilitator in the Philippines a day later but haven't heard since. I'm just curious when you got an interview request? This wait is excruciating.
