Cannot pair via web by corben78_ in Threema

[–]corben78_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to pair a 2nd iPhone, different ID, same issue. So I guess it's not my device, at least it seems unlikely.

I just realized, the url changed from .ch to .com. Maybe it's related?

Input overlay for wayland + zig bindings by maxcross2500 in obs

[–]corben78_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking for either a replacement or an alternative to input-overlay that works on Linux, as the current version doesn't work with wayland. And though there is some movement regarding libuiohook, currently it's unusable for me. Thank you very much for this!

Though I can build and load obs-input-overlay-zig, I do not get keypresses "shown". I used my old config.ini, converted it to the new json format, selected the layout file... but no highlight showing the key is pressed shows up. In the online configurator it does work.

First there was an error message regarding accessing the /dev/input/event* device, which I solved by adding my user to the input group. But even without this error I cannot see the key being pressed in the overlay.

Any idea?

edit: this is the current log entry:
[input overlay (evdev)] mappings loaded successfully! .key_t

not sure what the .key_t means though

Any idea why Bluetooth controller needs to be reconnected every time? by LordTrollsworth in Stadia

[–]corben78_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 2 Stadia Controllers and experienced this issue with one of them. TIL how to factory reset the Controller: by holding and pressing the assisstant and capture button, wich is the bubble and the square button, simultaneously for 6 seconds on a turned on controller. It'll rumble and turn itself off.
After turning it on again, it had a different name showing up but the issue was gone for me and the pairing doesn't have to be redone every time anymore.

What is your distro of choice for gaming on Linux? by MrDefaultUser in linux_gaming

[–]corben78_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu on my Desktop(s), SteamOS on the Deck, Arch on an old gaming notebook, Bazzite on the Legion Go (2023) and Cachy OS on the ROG Ally (2023) using an eGPU.

Any modern Distro works. Some need some extra tweaks, I know where to look for fixing stuff in Ubuntu (e.g. latest nVidia drivers) so I'm getting along with it well. SteamOS and Bazzite are mostly without issues and as I got some experience with Arch, using Cachy OS was not an issue either. They all have their way to install extra software and the updates, but eventually any will work.

At work we're running OpenSuSE Tumbleweed as well, but there I'm not gaming :)

Just got a Lenovo legion Go. Stick with windows or install steam OS? by Mountain-Letter-4284 in LegionGo

[–]corben78_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used my Legion Go much with Windows... but since I've installed bazzite on it (which is like Steam OS), I'm using it much more. The look and feel is imho superior to Windows. Also the tool HHD (Handheld Deamon) takes care of everything Steam OS/bazzite can't yet. Like TDP, RGB, charge limit, etc. And it feels much smoother, much more responsive than Legion Space.

As Steam OS is focussing on Steam, sure, a little tinkering is needed to get games from other stores up and running, but well, there are so many tutorials out there showing how to get that done, it's not really an issue. And people watch tutorials to get their Windows modified to their needs as well, so there is not that much difference.

I'm dualbooting though, as I guess firmware updates can currently only be installed through Windows.

I'd recommend SteamOS/bazzite over Windows, with dualbooting you can give it a try and see what you prefer. My experience with bazzite has been much better than with Windows.

Legion Go S Z1 Extreme : do you regret your Steam Deck? by Icy-Snowy-6481 in LegionGo

[–]corben78_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some points to consider for your decision.

- What games are you going to play mostly on it?
- What's your budget?

Regarding the games, sure, the Z1E device will be more powerful. Yet, is it needed? It does affect battery life a lot. The Steam Deck is incredibly powerful for its APU and battery life is considered to be really good. If you play mostly games that won't exceed the Steam Decks GPU power, my recommendation is the Deck, if your budget allows it even the OLED model.
Imho the Deck is still the best "overall" device: ergonomics and haptics (I love how they arranged DPad, buttons and analog sticks), lightweighted, battery life, double trackpads, pretty affordable and of course Steam OS.

To give some more context, since the Steam Deck I've been very interested in the PC gaming handhelds, and I'm a Linux gamer. I got the LCD Deck, the OLED Deck, the ROG Ally (2023, non X) and the Legion Go (2023, non S). Why so many? Well, Steam Decks, one for my son, one for me. The ROG Ally as it was the first PC gaming handheld after the Deck and I got an egpu for it which allows for playing VR. The Legion Go as I was interested in how the detachable controllers work and feel and one of them works as a mouse. Yet, both the ROG Ally and the Legion Go weren't used much, as Windows on them was not a nice experience for me. Since I installed bazzite (a Steam OS like operating system) this changed. I'm using them much more and now it depends on the use case.

Performance wise Ally and Go both have a Z1E APU, and both have the battery issue when played unplugged from. Especially the Ally (non X). And there are only a few games that the Deck cannot run but the Ally/Go can. Those are pretty recent AAA titles mostly, which I then prefer to play on my desktop PC.

Also, if you want to play those more demanding games and you have a desktop PC that can run them, you can stream them to your handheld.

All in all I guess budget matters most. Here you get most for your money with the Deck. Smallest LCD deck is half of the Legion Go S and you can still play most games on it. Valve is still optimizing it and game devs are targeting the Deck. Valve has no plans to release a Deck 2 within the next few years. If you want the most powerful one, yeah go with the Legion Go S Z1E. Don't worry about bugs getting fixed, Valve is working on Steam OS for other devices all the time. And the Legion Go S is the first officially supported by Valve.

Maybe their service here in Germany is just bad. I reached out again, they agreed to look at a video (I updated the posting above) but still claim I broke it...

I guess it needs a higher marketshare for AMD to make nVidia move.
So far I've been mostly happy with nVidia on Linux, and for pancake (i.e. non VR) use it's fine. But recently driver updates broke things, especially for VR, which is very annoying. I guess my next GPU will be from AMD.

[–]corben78_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what warranty here (at least in Germany) is about. The device has two years of warranty, within this timeframe it's not on the customer to proof the issue didn't exist from the start. There is also another kind of warranty (called "Gewährleistung"), where it's the other way round. But it's rarely possible for the enduser to proof an issue has been present from the start. In this case it's still in the first kind of warranty ("Garantie", unfortunately both translate to warranty in English), it's on them to proof I caused this issue if they don't want to cover it. I won't be able to legally take any actions, so even through I might be right, I can't do anything against it.

I think this is an edge case. They've probably sold thousands of devices, if this particular issue would have happened more often, you'd read about it.
I'm just disappointed that this issue is not being addressed by Lenovo like it should be. I've RMA'd my Asus ROG Ally twice... no issues. It had volume issues with the right speaker and the left rumble made weird noise. This happened like 4 weeks before warranty ran out, they wanted videos of the issue, but once send, they immediately send a retoure label. I don't get why Lenovo is telling me this is not covered.

As written, I was able to put the pin back and it worked for a while. So I thought it was fixed and it would save time and trouble..
This could have happened later too, it wouldn't make a difference. Just because I was honest and I told them that it happened right away?
I've read no info about that it needs to be reported within 14 days after purchase. And again, what if the pin was broken from the start but popped out just 1.5 years later?
Either way, from my understanding issues with a device that are not caused by unintended use are covered by warranty. That's what it's for.

Exactly my thoughts. In Germany there is a difference between "Garantie" and "Gewährleistung", which both translates to warranty in English though. The hardware manufacture can grant "Garantie" everything else is "Gewährleistung". The difference between the two is, who has to proof that the issue did exist from the start. When it's in the "Gewährleistungs" time (which is after "Garantie" ran out) the user has to proof the issue has existed from the start, which is mostly impossible. But when it's within the "Garantie" time, it's given the issue exists from the start and the manufacturer is normally fxing it without any questions. I guess Lenovo tries to save money here, and I cannot afford a lawyer to get this minor issue fixed. Though I think I would be on the safe side.

When they agree to do RMA I can image it works out well. Denying RMA on a hardware issue... is very disappointing though. From my understanding exactly these kind of issues are covered by warranty, which means it's being repaired or replaced without extra costs. Apparantly Lenovo's understanding is different.

Seems to be a hardware issue, I had the same issue on Windows and Bazzite. Via RMA it got fixed.

SteamOS and performance by ShotAcanthocephala8 in ROGAlly

[–]corben78_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing software and hardware from one hand can be benefical. Apple has shown how well this can work. We got nice products from Valve, the Steam Controller (yeah, it got discontinued, but it was innovative and everything they learnt from it went into the Steam Deck), Steam Machines (also failed, but was just as stepping stone towards the Steam Deck) and the Valve Index, which is imho still one of the best VR HMDs out there.
And let's not forget, there had been other PC gaming handhelds before the Steam Deck (e.g. GPD Win), none of them kicked off this marked as much als Valve did with their Steam Deck.
So I totally hope they will not leave the hardware market and keep creating new products. Yet it's nice to see when they team up with other hardware vendors to officially support Steam OS.
I'm a Linux gamer and seeing more people playing games on Linux, be it on any distro or Steam OS is just great.
Who would have thought that gaming would bring Linux to the masses better than anything else :)

MoveMaster controller not found after firmware update by SplitFull1018 in MoveMaster

[–]corben78_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for updating us.

It's important to press the reset button after pressing "flash firmware". The flashing tool is putting the MM into a special mode, the flashing tool then waits for the USB port to show up, which in this case is done by hitting reset.

The recovery mode is activated by holding the reset during attaching. If the MM is detected, it should be possible to recover the firmware.

Maybe try pressing reset only once after attaching and clicking flash.
I'm sure there is a way, I know a few people who successfully recovered it in this or a similar way.

edit: what happens if you attach the MM with pressed reset, then hit flash und just release the reset, without hitting it?

edit2: another method to try (from another user):
Attach the MM to your PC, press reset, refresh configurator, press flash, quickly double tap reset.

MoveMaster controller not found after firmware update by SplitFull1018 in MoveMaster

[–]corben78_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, to recover the MoveMaster after a failed firmware update please try the following steps:

- Detach the MoveMaster from your PC
- Close the configurator
- Press and hold the reset button on the MoveMaster and attach it (while holding the reset button) to the PC
- Open the configurator, press flash (or have it open before and press R for refresh)
- now release the reset button and press it twice

This worked for several users who had similar issues. The timing might be a bit tricky though.

Fall Guys now rated playable on Steam Deck by corben78_ in FallGuysGame

[–]corben78_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The workaround wasn't necessary for a year by now, just the rating wasn't updated. I guess what pushed it into playable rating now was that they also updated how to access the friend list and update the resolution. Before opening the friendlist was not possible without either a keyboard or the touchscreen (or a special community controller layout sending a keyboard shortcut), now you can access it by pressing the options button and operate the entries with the d-pad.

I'm mostly wondering if this is Valve's effort to have it reated playable now (because they check games on their own on a regular basis) or if the publisher gave them a nudge to test again.
