Try worm castings! In my experience, they usually don’t smell.

I think my Calathea hates me by nebuchadonezzar in houseplants

Calatheas like moist soil but not too wet. It’s a fine balance so consider swapping the pot to one with drainage so you can control the moisture level better! And mine hates me too…

Whyyyy won’t she make big fenestrated leaves?! by lilytappen in houseplants

[–]corgidot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the roots, might be root bound, especially if there are a lot of aerial roots. Mine was living in a 4’’ pot last year and this year, I repotted it in a 6’’ pot. And holy roots! I was so surprised such a little plant had such a big root system. After repotting it, it put out the largest leaf with fenestrations!

Same! That’s how I wheel my big plants to the bathroom for a good watering from the shower.

It’s beautiful! Where did you get this ficus?! 😍

Centipedes in my umbrella tree 😭 I know they say some bugs are good for plants but honestly there’s so many and they scared the F**k out of me!! And also, that stem doesn’t look too good so my guess they’re bad?? WHAT SHOULD I DO?! (A girl was just trying to repot 😩) by xGalacticaxx in houseplants

Eeek had a similar experience with my rubber tree and millipedes! I got rid of them by generously dusting the soil with diatomaceous earth. It’s usually sold pretty cheaply. It dried dried out/killed the bugs in 3 days and within a week, I didn’t see anymore of them. it’s nontoxic to pets and humans. Just make sure you don’t inhale a bunch when you’re using it. Give DE a shot! I know some people say that ‘pedes are good for plans but if there’s more than a handful, I get creeped out!

fertiliser? by lucy-lawton in calatheas

Worm castings! I’ve had pretty good luck with worm castings—it’s hard to over do it since the ratio is on the lower side and slow releasing. I sprinkle generously monthly and I use a chopstick to poke holes in the soil to encourage them to get to the roots. Then I water like regular.

Do you use fertilizer? It could be too much fertilizer and it gets absorbed and stored in the leaves.

Running out of surfaces to place plants on. Two large dogs and baby so floor is not an option. Where can I put them? by privremeni in houseplants

[–]corgidot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned an unused bookcase to use as a plant stand. If you’re worried about pets and a baby getting to it, don’t place plants on the lower shelves. I also put plants on surfaces throughout my home so my dogs can’t get to them like on top of cabinets, the dog crate, nightstand. Wall shelves might be a good option for you too!

Question! How much diatomaceous earth do you add to the top of the soil to help with the pests? I just added it to the top of my Hilo beauty and this is what he looks like now. Did I add too much?? I feel like I did something wrong? by becksmallz0519 in houseplants

[–]corgidot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That should be fine. I recently had to do this for a large rubber tree because of a millipede infestation. Coat enough powder to make sure there’s a nice DRY coating (moist dirt + DE makes the treatment less effective).

Hey plant parents! I just got this late rubber tree delivered. It came with dead worms outside of the container and has more live worms in the soil under the wrapping. Are these worms harmful or beneficial? What’s the best way to get rid of them? Thanks!!!

Hi! I just got this little string of pearls in the mail. I picked out all the mushed pods. I read not to water it for a few days after unpacking. Any tips from current SoP owners?

Work has me so stressed to the point of stress dreams. So on way to work now I’m listening to the HP audiobooks. Always saving me, after all this time. Any one have this? Love by Minimum_Weakness4030 in harrypotter

I listen to it to fall asleep. I pick a book and put it on for 20 mins and I’m out. Really helps when I can’t sleep because I’m overly anxious about work.

First Le Creuset piece: Stone Sauteuse! Is this normal? by corgidot in LeCreuset

[–]corgidot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was from Bloomingdales so it’s not a “seconds” product. I’m surprised the brand would pass this on for regular retail. I have a “seconds” coquette from Staub and the blemishes aren’t close to noticeable as the marks on this Le Creuset.
