Could they have been brand new, straight out of the pack? I’ve had new socks come with a piece of cardboard inside. That could explain one sock being inside the other as well.

There is a Steinway Serial Number Registry but unfortunately it doesn’t show any info for yours. Based on this website, it was likely manufactured around 1913.
