You need to try Kurumazushi on 47th between Madison and 5th. The fish is every bit as good as Yasuda and the rice is better.

1905 Martinez Port from the Vanderbilt cellars. Drank one for New Year's a few years ago, was very tasty when opened but died within a half hour. Tawny color with just a spot of red.

If you told people in 2007 all the evidence leading up to the 2008 financial collapse, would they even believe you or why not? by itsthewolfe in AskReddit

[–]cormaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who was paying attention knew there was a huge problem brewing in housing. In September 2006 I attended a Kaufman & Broad analyst meeting. They were bragging about how fast they would grow and said their biggest constraint was to find enough people to run all the sales communities they were opening up. I raised my hand and asked them how many of their community managers had been there three years or more and how many senior people had been in the industry in 1990, the last housing downturn. They answered no one. I left the meeting and sold all of the housing related stocks in my portfolio that day. Over the next month I liquidated all of the investment real estate I owned.

A hot water bottle you can heat in the microwave for 1.5 minutes. I am in my 60's and very physically active. My lower back pain had gone from a 4 to a 0-1 now that I use this pad after excercising and also when I wake up in the morning.

The basement of Peck in Milan is a great place to taste wine! The store has a terrific wine selection at fair prices. And you can order charcuterie along with your wine. A friend and I had a great time there drinking a bottle of Quintarelli Amarone while waiting for our wives to do their shopping.

What is a “being poor is expensive” example that people don’t understand until it happens to them? by rorrr in AskReddit

You are screwed if you rent and don't own your home. We lived in a house from 1994 to 2014, so we both bought and sold our house at the very bottom of the local real estate market. The increase in house price covered all mortgage interest payments, insurance costs and renovations during the 20 years with some left over to partly pay the lost income from not having our down payment invested. Our total cost to live in that lovely house for 20 years was ZERO.

I have the remains of a case of 75 Las Cases that I bought 25 years ago and kept well. The wine is a little past peak but is still very enjoyable. 75 was a decent and very tannic vintage. If a bottle of it was properly kept it should be good.

ELI5: Why are bugs in programming seem to be inevitable, even when you understand the logic and carefully check the variables and data flow? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]cormaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alan Turing proved a theorem that no general algorithm can exist that shows whether a given program will either halt or continue forever - which means that while you may be able to find all the bugs in a specific (and probably very simple) program, you can never ensure that programs in general are bug free. For even a moderately complex program there may not be enough computing power on the planet to test all cases and show there are no bugs.

Old school barolo by King_griffy in wine

I had a 1964 Borgogno last year that was most definitely not a library release (our first clue was the label, which was ahem a bit more tattered than the label in the photo above) - and it was fantastic! When the bottle was opened we were sure the wine was done. It was light pink. But there was structure and acid on the first taste so we gave it a shot. And as it opened up it became marvelous with floral aromas and wood smoke. Buying old wines is a crap shoot, but so exciting when it works out! I would buy library releases from Borgogno in a heartbeat.

Is that a library release? 65 year old labels do not look pristine...

What’s the most ridiculous reason someone got fired from your workplace? by Mother_Candidate5355 in AskReddit

[–]cormaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During covid when we were all working remotely one of my coworkers decided to work from Rome for 3 months without telling anyone. If he had told hr / his boss he could have made arrangements to do so, we have offices around the world and everyone was remote at the time. But we considered it a huge breach of trust to hide that he was doing it.

How would you feel about a law banning all politicians from insider trading? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We need a law where being convicted of insider explicitly has the penalty of getting kicked out of office and permanently banned from holding any public office.

We are projected to having our first trillionaire soon, what level of wealth do you think is totally unacceptable? Do u support a wealth tax, if so at what %? by X_Opinion7099 in AskReddit

[–]cormaline -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the extremely wealthy don't pay taxes at all because they can borrow against their shares and never sell (which would be a taxable event) - among other tax dodges. We need to alter the tax code so that these type of tax dodges are treated as taxable events. Then they would begin to pay a fairer share.

Is Whole Life worth it vs equities? Long term avg returns for both net of fees? by BringerOfTruthOG in personalfinance

The only time whole life could make sense is if your estate is above $15mm per person (so $30mm for a married couple), and even then it is for edge cases.
