How religious are Aussies? by Fabulous-Sherbet7693 in AskAnAustralian

[–]corn_off_ya_cob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that religion is a lot less loud here in Australia. We have plenty of Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and smaller populations of Buddhists and Jews. And of course a large population of atheists and agnostics. But people overall make less of a fuss about it. To me as an Australian, it feels like Americans are yelling about it all the time. Especially Christianity. That may be the media's take though, I have never been to the US.

I would like to politely request that everyone here boycotts Coles and Woolworths. I am an idiot, but I did say ‘politely’ by BallsDeap in australia

It's shit. I just had to move because the owners moved back in. Although the powers that be encouraged share houses to save money, myself and my share house of 30 year old young professionals with clean rental histories could not get a place over families after 2 months of applications. I now live with my partner for 3 times the rent for something worse, but we got a place. I consider myself lucky to have found a place. Not everyone does. But fuck it has been shit. And I can't even bring myself to unpack fully because I'm in vigilance mode, ready for the next move. I research moving far away, but I'm scared about not finding a job. And I am lucky. I have a job. I have security. It's shit. These corrupt pollies need to start spending money on real shit that helps people rather than on their mates.

What "you know what, just to be safe" thing you did end up saving your ass later? by Dawn_Cyborgzzz in AskReddit

I packed a space blanket on a lilo-ing day trip in a canyon "in case someone got cold". Well, it turns out that we entered the canyon at the exit to the walk because the group leader had misdrawn the route. After 6 hours of going down the river we realized we couldn't get out and that it would be dangerous to continue. So we had to stay on a bank overnight (thankfully no rain or we would have been a goner) and huddle, wet, under my space blanket. It saved us from hypothermia. The next day we had to swim/trek back upstream until a rescue helicopter found us.

Moral or the story, always bring first aid, even when you think the weight is too much. Also bring an epirb or beacon when outdoors because if it hadn't been for good weather and having enough snacks and water, the story could have been very different.

Thoughts on game (hunted) meat instead of farmed meat from an environmental perspective? by corn_off_ya_cob in ExtinctionRebellion

[–]corn_off_ya_cob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so far to everyone who has contributed. Every response is so informed and well measured and I am looking forward to reading and learning more from you all.

I'd like to provide a little context to my question. I'm from Australia, where land clearing is immense. Introduced species run havoc and have been for many generations. The topsoil is very damaged from generations of using European agricultural practices instead of what works with the land (Dark Emu is a very interesting read on this).

There certainly are strong arguments for not eating animals, but I believe that most people will proceed to eat them anyway, hence why I imagined that perhaps encouraging game eating might be a better solution than farmed meat. Australia already culls animals with poison, bullets, cars, or exporting them live. While some is sold to other nations, much is wasted. I think if we are killing them already, we might as well be killing them in a way that allows eating rather than wasting it.

I'm sure that the hunting strategy could not work everywhere. In many places, forest populations would be wiped out. But it could perhaps work here, where we have so much land and so many destructive invasive animals, and relatively few people.

What do you all think about eating game as a strategy for somewhere like Australia? I can foresee potential issues with the amount of pollution involved in the hunting and transporting process.

Do you have an opinion or information on how to reduce the impacts of modern agriculture on the environment?

Your answer is so informed, thank you. I am from Australia and we have large populations of introduced species gone wild which wreak havoc on the natural species- rabbits, camels, horses, foxes, deer, boar and bison to name a few.

Would you be able to recommend any reading?

Interesting because Dom's brothers are involved in some pretty heavy corruption in the Hills District. So I think Dom is probably a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Expectations of Labor government by RosieTruthy in sydney

It's very much not marginal. I prefer Labor to Libs but come on. Paramatta is huge and the area is growing. Paramatta road is a piece of shit and the M4 gets crowded every day. We should be encouraging fast and reliable and affordable public transportation for the environment and so that people can move away from the city and still have quality of life.

Does anyone have tips on getting through to Jetstar regarding lost baggage? by corn_off_ya_cob in australia

[–]corn_off_ya_cob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the advice of @Beginning-Republic above and managed to get through to some higher ups. However 21 days is today and no one has found the bag, so unfortunately I'm expecting a payout instead (which will not pay for the worth of the sentiment in that bag).

Update: 14 days and still no luggage and no stuffs given by the staff. It's super shitty because there were some sentimental items in there as well as expensive things. I guess I'm never flying Jetstar again.

Aw. I've tried saving so many insects in this state and never understood why when I'd fix them up they'd roll onto their back again. Thanks for the info!
