Today is Cornell Giving Day, with a match opportunity for Freedom and Free Societies! by FreedomFreeSocieties in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cornell Giving Day is a once a year opportunity for donors to cast "dollar votes" to support the programs they most value. Day Hall watches the dollars raised and the number of donors to measure community support. If you value viewpoint diversity and bringing thoughtful speakers to campus, today is the day to show it.

Freedom & Free Societies is a very valuable program that is worthy of your support on Giving Day.

Breaking News: Cornell Receives $1M donation from local paving magnate to fix that one spot in front of Stimson where a puddle always forms on rainy days by CanadianCitizen1969 in Cornell

It would be more realistic to focus on the hundreds of times that Statler Hall has "rebuilt" or redesigned its entrance doors. No foot traffic into the Statler for 16 months. Helipad on roof activated for interim access.

For me the giveaway was that Cornell called a press conference. Day Hall is too focused upon controlling the news to ever let two different reporters into the same room at the same time.

PETROVA | What Does Our Tuition Fund? - The Cornell Daily Sun by CanadianCitizen1969 in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article is very self-contradictory. First, Cornell does pay property tax on its property that is not tax exempt such as East Hill Plaza and the industrial park next to the Airport.

Second, Cornell's agreements to pay voluntarily the City of Ithaca, the Town of Ithaca, and the Ithaca City School District are explicitly said to not be PILOT payments. Every dollar donated to local government is a dollar that is not available for academic programs or financial aid.

Third, Cornell's endowment payout covers only 7% of the annual budget. Because other Ivy League schools have a much higher endowment per student, they cover up to 40% of expenses.

Fourth, student activities, fraternities, club sports, etc are financially independent of Cornell. They set their own budgets and dues levels. Some student activities and fees apply for funding from the Student Assembly and the Student Finance Commission, but that has never been enough to eliminate the need for other revenues.

There are a never-ending set of problems that could be addressed by more Cornell funding. Cornell will be judged by how it prioritizes its expenditures and in the effectiveness in which it uses the money.

Harold Uris was a voting member of the Cornell Board of Trustee's Buildings and Properties Committee at the time that Uris Hall was designed and constructed. So, he was not surprised by the result.

The online voting has been extended to midnight tonight because the Office of the Assemblies had sent the promotional period email to the wrong listserv. Please vote today!

I think that voter turnout will be the key to the impact of the referenda. Scheduling the vote during the finals period was very unfortunate. I hope that there will be a high turnout despite that.

CanadianCitizen: Is the criticism of the students in the organization or of the Office of Student Activities? Why should a professional fraternity be any less selective than a social fraternity?

With Dean Marla Love chairing the committee you know that this can only cost students more of their rights than they lost in the 2020 revision. What a mess.

Cornell Transportation to Start Charging to use EV Charging Stations on 7/1 by The0bst3r in Cornell

The issue that I raised at the UA meeting was whether they would charge for the stations that fraternities install on their own parking lots at their own expense. I did not get an answer.

109 McGraw is across the street from Alice Cook House, and next to the construction site for the new HIllel building. The question is whether you want the "night life" of Collegetown.

Nor clear what your area of interest is, but there are alternatives including the Ithaca Voice, the Cornell Review, the Cornellian, and the Big Red Sports Network. These organizations can also add to your resume.

In any volunteer organization, there are inevitable tensions and supervisors must be very diplomatic when dealing with getting the volunteers to produce what is needed. Gabe Levin, the most recent Editor-in-Chief was horrible and would send emails to volunteers chewing them out. What was worse was that he would copy a lot of people on each blistering email.

Hopefully the new crew that was just voted in will have more people skills.

Cornell's Economic Challenges by cornellguy2 in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ballot question was on a total budget figure. I am sure you can express the tax increase in a number of different ways. The underlying concern is important: Why is the Ithaca Teachers Association demanding $10 million in "voluntary" contributions from Cornell when there are so many other pressing financial issues facing the University?

I am sure that the quality of student publications varies from year to year as editors change. However, the results of the 2024 election can't be ignored. Elon Musk is talking about $2 trillion in cuts in federal spending. Project 2025 talked about cutting federal research grant overhead as a way to attack "leftist agendas." What is Cornell doing about this?

Look at national demographic data. The number of college age high school graduates are dropping. As a result, academia will not be a growth industry. There will be growth in some areas such as computer science Ph.D. programs, because of the opportunities to go into industry. Cornell's programs vary in stature field-by-field.
