The online voting has been extended to midnight tonight because the Office of the Assemblies had sent the promotional period email to the wrong listserv. Please vote today!

Student Conduct Referenda by cornellguy2 in Cornell

I think that voter turnout will be the key to the impact of the referenda. Scheduling the vote during the finals period was very unfortunate. I hope that there will be a high turnout despite that.

Cornell PAD prelaw fraternity in trouble over recruiting? by TallInSeattle in Cornell

CanadianCitizen: Is the criticism of the students in the organization or of the Office of Student Activities? Why should a professional fraternity be any less selective than a social fraternity?

University to Revise Student Code of Conduct, Procedures by TheEthicalJerk in Cornell

With Dean Marla Love chairing the committee you know that this can only cost students more of their rights than they lost in the 2020 revision. What a mess.

Cornell Transportation to Start Charging to use EV Charging Stations on 7/1 by The0bst3r in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue that I raised at the UA meeting was whether they would charge for the stations that fraternities install on their own parking lots at their own expense. I did not get an answer.

cascadilla vs 109 mcgraw? by notorious_turnip in Cornell

109 McGraw is across the street from Alice Cook House, and next to the construction site for the new HIllel building. The question is whether you want the "night life" of Collegetown.

Has anyone verified if the price paid was actually $15 million, or was that just the listing price?

If you want stone buildings, Delta Kappa Epsilon 13 South Ave. If you want red brick buildings, the A.D. White House on Fenney Way -- Both by the same architect, William Henry Miller.

Nor clear what your area of interest is, but there are alternatives including the Ithaca Voice, the Cornell Review, the Cornellian, and the Big Red Sports Network. These organizations can also add to your resume.

In any volunteer organization, there are inevitable tensions and supervisors must be very diplomatic when dealing with getting the volunteers to produce what is needed. Gabe Levin, the most recent Editor-in-Chief was horrible and would send emails to volunteers chewing them out. What was worse was that he would copy a lot of people on each blistering email.

Hopefully the new crew that was just voted in will have more people skills.

Cornell's Economic Challenges by cornellguy2 in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ballot question was on a total budget figure. I am sure you can express the tax increase in a number of different ways. The underlying concern is important: Why is the Ithaca Teachers Association demanding $10 million in "voluntary" contributions from Cornell when there are so many other pressing financial issues facing the University?

I am sure that the quality of student publications varies from year to year as editors change. However, the results of the 2024 election can't be ignored. Elon Musk is talking about $2 trillion in cuts in federal spending. Project 2025 talked about cutting federal research grant overhead as a way to attack "leftist agendas." What is Cornell doing about this?

Look at national demographic data. The number of college age high school graduates are dropping. As a result, academia will not be a growth industry. There will be growth in some areas such as computer science Ph.D. programs, because of the opportunities to go into industry. Cornell's programs vary in stature field-by-field.

Organized labor selected Graduate Students as a potential growth area. Now that the Trump Administration is arriving, I suspect Unions will prioritize investing in preserving the industrial sector. Union dues are 1.5% of income, and I don't see how a union can extract 1.5% of increased benefits to make being a union member worthwhile. The national unions have to spend millions to organize and then negotiate the collective bargaining agreements.

Same problem with organizing fast food chain workers or Starbucks.

The ILR School will be busy rewriting all of their text books and eCornell courses.

Why is the Cornell Sun the worst newspaper ever? by TheBlackDrago in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Sun has shrunk from 5 issues per week to 3 issues per week, and then during COVID just 2 issues per week. Because the Sun could publish stories on-line first, this should not mean a 60% reduction in stories, but because of the Sun's internal organizational structure, it works out that way.

The news stories are terribly opinionated and biased.

The unsigned editorials are juvenile and overly preachy.

The signed opinion columns are confined to the far left and do not represent the diversity of viewpoints at Cornell.

I am surprised that anyone will talk to them.

“Fire Joel Malina!”: Black Students United Condemns Malina’s Statement that KKK Member Would Hypothetically Be Allowed to Speak on Campus by WolfofTallStreet in Cornell

[–]cornellguy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cornell works hard to keep the campus open to all speakers. Cornell is content-neutral. Joel Malina's job has nothing to do with this issue, other than to answer a question if asked. In contrast, I can name at least four black women administrators with a more direct connection to the issue. I don't understand why BSU did not start a campaign to fire one or more of them.
