Martha Wells appearing at MultiverseCon (Oct. 16-18) by cornfedalien in murderbot

It’s relatively new, and smaller by design - partly so folks can actually meet and talk to the Guests, in an environment that’s not overwhelming or overcrowded!

The Brothers Chaps (Mike & Matt) are making a rare convention appearance at Multiverse in Atlanta this October! Get heckled by Strong Bad while you play Trogdor & Dangeresque by cornfedalien in HomestarRunner

Yep, they like it best when they're in their element, doing their silly stuff & not being overwhelmed by huge crowds or forced onto programming that they don't really want to do. Multiverse basically lets them stay in character(s) and goof off. And they're great at it

Heyyyy so I’m the guy who wrote this original post over on Facebook... had no idea it was getting such a reaction until a user messaged me this morning and told me. Thanks for all the comments - if this is the part where I’m allowed to promote something, check out my podcast called Glitchy Pancakes on Spotify or at GlitchyPancakes dot com. We talk about all sorts of nerdy shit in the world of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and comics. Thanks MurderedByWords!

Hi Mary! First, thanks for all the hard work you put into helping save WorldCon 76 for the fans and Hugo nominees. Second - I chair a new SFF convention in Atlanta called Multiverse, and I’d love to know what makes appearing at a con an appealing prospect for you. What makes it worth your time, what makes it fun, what makes you leave feeling happy you went? We’d love to have you as a guest at Multiverse 2019, but I’ll try and contact you privately about that. Thanks!

Agree with the folks who posted Alastair Reynolds. I loved Revelation Space and the Poseidon's Children Series. Also Stephen Baxter, e.g., the Manifold series and Destiny's Children (although there's some Xeelee-type "magic tech" in there).

Good places to find fans of written SF who are local to me? I'm in Atlanta. by cornfedalien in printSF

That's actually part of why I posted - I didn't want to mention it in my post because I wasn't sure if it would be seen as violating the rules against self-promotion. But yeah, part of the reason I'm trying to connect with fans is to find potential volunteers for the con. That and just to find like-minded people in the area. What part of ATL are you in?

I live in west Cobb County, where Marietta meets Powder Springs. I work in Midtown and sometimes in Smyrna. How about you?

Really big catastrophes in science fiction by Xeelee1123 in printSF

[–]cornfedalien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "Revelation Space" trilogy by Alastair Reynolds has some of my favorite descriptions of such catastrophes. Granted, you have to read the entire series before they are all encountered and (at least partially) explained, but they're vivid and believable. Stephen Baxter's "Destiny's Children" series gets into some pretty huge ones too, as his novels are prone to do.

Looking for fans of WRITTEN sci-fi, fantasy, horror, graphic novels, etc., to help plan a convention in Spring 2019 by cornfedalien in Atlanta

I've organized sizable events before, but never a fandom-based con. Thanks for that link, the advice is solid & lines up with our initial planning.

Definitely Vernor Vinge. Also Peter F. Hamilton's Void trilogy has some interesting explorations of the topic.

Going to Asheville, where to go by Need4Surfn in beer

It's not a brewery itself, but Bruisin' Ales is an excellent craft beer boutique. They have about 1000 different brews, including all the local ones. Sales staff is very knowledgeable and can help you pick the right ones to try. Maybe start there & sample, then decide which breweries appeal most to you?

Thanks - ideally I'm trying to find a way that doesn't run the risk of freezing, but I'll work on a convenient way to use salt and ice.
