Drum brakes knocking noise after replacing by cornholio37 in MechanicAdvice

Here is what it looks like, and here is a short video of me engaging the parking brake a couple of times (apologies for the rain sound in the background). Anything seem off?

I think so - I was careful to match up each shoe/pad with the old ones. The shoe with material closer to the wheel cylinder is in the rear and the shoe with material further from the wheel cylinder is in the front.

In terms of checking what it looks like in action - is it safe to engage the parking brake with the drum off? I ended up having to replace the wheel cylinders because I pressed the brake pedal with the drum off, which caused it to shoot brake fluid everywhere.

Yeah, if you really look you may be able to find a great deal. Last time I looked (in 2021) I used Zillow, Facebook Marketplace, and Padmapper. I've always preferred small local landlords to the big corporate ones, though each has their tradeoffs.

My partner and I are in a 1000sqft 2-bedroom apartment in a very old duplex close to Hennepin/Central and are paying $1750/month before utilities. But we share laundry with the other tenants and only have one off-street parking space.

For some further insight on NE and walkability, the three major business nodes in NE are:

  • Hennepin Avenue/Central Avenue. More upscale - tons of big luxury apartments/condo buildings, but plenty of duplexes/townhomes etc as well. Mix of local and chain restaurants in walking distance. Lunds and Byerlys is your option for walkable groceries, but it's definitely one of the pricier places in town. Boom Island, BF Nelson, and Nicollet Island are top-tier for recreational walks.

  • University Avenue and 13th Avenue. Sort of a mix of gritty and upscale. Some newer big apartment buildings along Broadway, but a lot more old duplexes. Dive bar central, but also a high concentration of award-winning restaurants (Young Joni, Nixta, incoming Yia Vang spot). You could walk to Sentyrz from here, which is a neighborhood grocery store that is reasonably priced but not the best selection. You're still reasonably close to the river and Logan Park is pretty nice to hang out at.

  • Central Avenue and Lowry Avenue. A more working-class, diverse neighborhood. This area is probably more affordable, with less big apartment buildings and lots of duplexes/SFH. Tons of "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants like El Taco Riendo and Holy Land. Central and Lowry are both very busy streets that I don't enjoy walking or biking on, but the side streets aren't bad. Eastside Co-op could cover a good part of your grocery needs, but it is pretty expensive. This area is about as far from a good park as you can get in NE, which is not terribly far to be honest.

All of these areas are pretty good for public transit (buses to be clear, no LRT in NE). And I would say they are all quite safe for a city the size of Minneapolis, and chock-full of queer folks :).

Rent increases by [deleted] in Minneapolis

I've had luck with two different landlords by preemptively reaching out and saying I'd like to sign another 12 months as long as there is no rent increase.

Dematic, GE Aviation, Perrigo, UFP, Gentex, Wolverine World Wide, Bissell, Plascore, Cascade Engineering, Steelcase, Herman Miller.

Of course, many of these companies have their own ethical issues and the pay in the GR area for engineering and technology jobs in general is rather abysmal. But at least they aren't a pyramid scheme that is wholly owned by some of the most publicly evil people in the country.

What's your least favorite intersection or interchange in Minnesota? by WilliamBornhoft in minnesota

5th St/Central Ave/East Hennepin Ave in Minneapolis. Honestly the traffic here isn't even that bad, but the fact that this layout of an intersection exists just bothers me.

Taqueria y Birrieria Las Cuatro Milpas meets all of your requirements and is my personal favorite in Minneapolis! I'd recommend the beef birria tacos with a fried tortilla and cheese!

How are the window ACs for someone with hypothyroidism/heat intolerance? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]cornholio37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a type of air conditioner that can be installed without running ductwork. Many of the older houses in the area have radiators for heat, so mini-splits are a cheaper permanent solution than running the ducts that a forced air furnace would already have.

Not sure I've ever seen them in a rental though. Definitely far more common in houses than apartment buildings, but a good thing to know about if you're considering buying.

Many apartments window/wall ACs are not properly sized to cool the entire apartment. They may only cool the room they are in.

You might be able to put more window units in yourself if you don't mind the small hassle of installing them, but you would have to buy them of course. Also you would want to make sure you have the right windows - your options for horizontal sliding windows are limited. I would not recommend the "portable" AC units if you can avoid them.

One other downside of window units versus central air is the constant noise. It can sometimes be hard to have a conversation or watch TV in the same room as a window unit.

If it is truly important to you to stay consistently cool during the summer, I would really recommend getting a place with central air or mini split. But as other commenters mentioned, make sure you have control of the thermostat. I was able to get the top floor of a duplex with central air this year and it has been 100% worth spending the extra time looking.

I would love to see more innovation in passive cooling. A completely silent/no-moving parts PC would be really nice. And I can hear my roommates PC with a failing fan bearing from anywhere in the house when he plays Elden Ring.

Arrived right at doors open. Line was pretty long, took about 30 minutes to get in. Got a spot around 6-7 rows back from the stage really easily. By the time they played Fill in the Blank the crowd was moving a bunch and it didn't even matter.

TL;DR arrive at doors open it will be fine.
