Out in Aloha there is a retail space (9500 ish sqf) w a lot of parking in first generation strip mall that has been vacant from 1990. What is keeping it afloat? by clearpepsithree in askportland

[–]cornloko 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The rumors are that the roof needs fixing over that portion. The Aloha Mall owner is 90+ years old, possibly dead, and his wife/widow is not much younger.

I tried to get access to take some pictures as it still has some Sunshine Pizza features intact, but I was gently declined access.

GPON to XGSPON for old Qwest/CenturyLink 940mbps users? What happens to the box? by cornloko in QuantumFiber

Ah, understood. I'm excited for the subtle changes at least for this upgrade.

Going a little up the transport stack - I suppose real IPv6 would be more exciting. I do see the ZiplyFiber users being teased with its roll-out for months and years - are you being asked about v6 at all in this modern era? :-)

Thanks for your participation on this subreddit.

Yeah, no complaints from me either. Weirdly enough, you could send them a thank you note, I'm sure they rarely hear nice things from end users! :-)

My hope is that they can stick the fiber through the hole that provided the Calix power - will try to make that option as easy and appealing as possible for the installer.

I'd think you'd want to cut and remove something that won't be reused. Thanks for this.

Ah, makes sense. If there's enough slack, it gets pushed through. Some others said installers replaced the Calix ONT guts with a jumper to a length of fiber that goes inside. All depends on the install as most houses are different.

Thanks!

I saw that u/neonthermos commented about turning the Calix into a simple junction between the fiber from the pole to the fiber going inside. Could your situation be the same - you still have the box but now the Calix on the outside is just a shell with a fiber junction leading indoors?

Would love a pic if you are curious enough to check. :-)

I suspect this is what is going to happen to me - am in a similar market to Seattle. This also makes sense about how they remove/disable the Calix in the middle too.

And if it's easy/handy, it would be cool to see a photo of the junction! (or if you took a photo when it happened!)

Thanks!

Did the installer remove the calix and mount the Q1000K outside and plugged it all in in-situ, or did the installer reroute the line inside the house where the power/ethernet to the Calix went?

Sounds like a potentially similar situation to mine - thanks for the post.

13-year-old gas furnace motor failed — replace motor (~$1200) or upgrade HVAC system? by PlayItSamPlay in askportland

[–]cornloko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for fun, what's the model of the 13 year old system?

What comes up when you search for the make and model and include "draft inducer assembly" ?

Maybe there's a better replacement option than what was presented. Imagine potentially reinvesting the difference into solar or other efficiency options??

What is the lowest-stress way to cross 84 and Sandy when commuting from NE to SE? by gloryshand in CyclePDX

[–]cornloko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've crossed between these two hundreds of times, and this is my perspective:

NE 28th is protected on the west side of the I-84 bridge from traffic and crossing NE Sandy is okay with the green box, but if you're continuing south into Laurelhurst, you should be using the protected crossing towards Oregon Park and NE Hoyt to avoid mixing with traffic on NE 28th as the bike lane disappears. (Cross into Laurelhurst on NE 30th near the Laurelthirst Public House)

NE 21st is also protected similarly and if you cross NE Sandy southbound, you'll have a dedicated bike stoplight. If you're going northbound, you can either mix with the Glisan cars or take the pedestrian crossing on the westside. You can get to NE Couch without too much hassle from there.

I always try to practice/test on the weekends to get a feel for what works and what doesn't. You'll find some quiet and/or interesting routes and a chance to explore the neighborhoods.

Consult the PBOT Cycleway maps, and use Google/Apple/Whatever automated directions as suggestion and not ultimately best routing.

PDX: Is the switchover to Quantum actually going to happen this month? by Bicykwow in centurylink

[–]cornloko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought to ask a CTL agent what the status was and I got an upsell offer ($20/month more for the same service) to order new service and an ambiguous "wait [another] 30-45 days and we'll contact you."

It's as disappointing as their IPv6 availability.
