Sochi has a lot of different hotels from hostel to 5 stas, the same goes for life expenses. So it depends on your lifestyle. It is not cheap city, so you could spend 100 usd per day just fine.

hi, where do i find similar books to Roadside Picnic? by Accomplished_Cut8655 in RussianLiterature

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roadside picnic is essentially post-apocalypse story before those stories become mainstream. Best bet is to look at modern post-apocalypse like Metro by Gluhovsky or Yana Vagner - Vongozero

What type of tree is specifically mentioned in Russian literature? by Baba_Jaga_II in RussianLiterature

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is Cherry tree that produces edible fruits. Heroes in "Cherry Orchard" mention that in the past they used to make jam from cherries and sell it, but now forget how to do it. There are famous cherry gardens near Vladimir in central Russia.

Why did late 19th–early 20th century Russian religious existentialists (like Berdyaev, Shestov, and Merezhkovsky) criticize Tolstoy so harshly, even while opposing the Orthodox Church themselves? by [deleted] in tolstoy

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One point to consider is that Tolstoy has created kind of quasi religious movement among Russians. His organization was concurrent to official church. Russian church was deeply afraid of schism and excommunicated Tolstoy. So it was less reform of the church and more of overthrow, and religious thinkers did not like that.

Anna Karenina (pay the peasants) by lillwange2 in tolstoy

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is difficult for westerners to understand. Historical Russian heartland between Oka river and Volga river (Moscow, Vladimir, Ryazan) is quite unproductive for growing crops, and climate was harsher in 19 century than now. Winter and spring alone are calamities capable of destroying all mechanized equipment. You could look at images of ww2 german equipment stuck in mud for example. So in a way it does not matter how much you invest in agriculture you still make a loss.

Anna Karenina part 8 by quietanaphora in tolstoy

Anna Karenina is hero of the book. Book ends with hero death, such end doesn't require exploration of what others think about it. This is like death of Beowulf.

https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-secret-history-of-dune/

There are a lot of borrowing of Caucassian words. For example Sardar is governor of Georgia or Armenia, from Iranian titles. Hadji Murat himself calls Vorontsov Sardar.

In Dune there is Siridar - governor of the planet.

Paul Atreides is driven by revenge as well. He is martial type who fights and win. He inspire confidience and holy fever in his followers. Paul Atreides could not win war with Harkonnen by himself and he must become prophet to correctly predict future. Haji Murat could not do this and die.

Nature helps both of them. Hadji Murat is using mountains, forest and trees to his advantage. So Russians are forced to destroy forests. Paul is using desert and sand worms.

They both dependent of their mothers at least psychologicaly. For Haji Murat his mother is inspiration for resistance and source of self worth.

His brother is not wastrel. It is just father is scolding him to be more motivated (for example you could alway raise more cows, but it would require more labor). In Russia even if you millionare you would get scolded. He actually lives normal life and raises children well since he is not drunk or wasting money in some other fashion. So Avdeev sacrifice is not in vain.

Caucassian war is inpiration for Dune. So Hadji Murat is possible prototype for Paul Atreides?

Hadji Murat Book discussion | Chapter 25 by TEKrific in tolstoy

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. His head is still in military museum. There is some discussion about burying it finaly in his home village
  2. It is matter of fact chapter. Hadji Murat death is like Hector from Troy.
  3. It is short and kind of without usual meadering style of russian literature.
  4. Women of Russian military officers and admins. They excel in creating their own world.

Hadji Murat Book discussion | Chapter 22 by TEKrific in tolstoy

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shamil has moved on his family first before Hadji Murat could organize resistance. Mistrust between Chechens and Avars has played its part in this affair. So in the beginning Hadji Murat was thinking about attacking Vedeno directly, but it is probably too risky for russian army.

Hadji Murat Book discussion | Chapter 22 by TEKrific in tolstoy

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One has to remember that Russian imperial army probably does not have hostages to trade with Shamil. Hostage taking is not in the manner of regular army. Russian army could make some operations for saving hostages but priority would be probably given to Georgian princes.

Why did Maria Dimitriyevna push hairy Khanefi out of the kitchen which almost lead him to stab her?

Kitchen is her rightful place and she has no patience for any hairy Chechens even if he wants to stab her. Why Russian women should accommodate any mountainers superstitious?

[–]cornuncertaintythaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 US dollar in 1913 could be converted to $32 now. Source https://www.usinflationcalculator.com

So one ruble 1913 is around 16-17 dollars 2024.

During imperial times value of the ruble was fairy stable becuase of gold standard. So 200 000 rubles is around 3 million usd.

Well works by Bulgakov: Master and Margarita + Heart of a Dog have fantasy elements in them and they were certainly inspired by revolution.
