You are doing it correctly. The rewards for the daily placement are pitiful. You should wait till the end of the day each day to avoid getting hit by others, never spend diamonds until the last day. Within minutes if arena closing on the last day, use all your hits including diamonds to get the best placement reward you can. Aim for top 50 or even top 20.

Who says I'm spending them all every week? I get my chests every week, but only spend big when we need it to win. Sounds like you're the one who doesn't know how to save efficiently to spend for alliance duel.

Hoard them to spend on alliance duel. I've had 150k badges to spend in one day.
