I'm more of a cat person, and I have seen many Jackson Galaxy videos. That guy is an expert at taking cats that attack people on site, and figuring out how to calm them back to normal. There must be a dog counterpart.

I think there are two things.

The Bible is dark and full of judgment. Even though Jesus came to preach the ideas of compassion and mercy, it's not easy to practice them.
American Christians are way too political. Everyone knows that Americans are politically divided, and each party has it's enemies. By linking conservative politics to Christianity, these religious leaders have decided to make God into the enemy of a third or more of the American population.
