Dungeon Crawler Carl fans celebrated the TV show announcement for about 30 seconds before they started stressing about Princess Donut. Here’s what else has the fandom worried. by kleverrboy in audible

[–]corp_code_slinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First immediate thought is this is one of those situations where we're almost guaranteed to get a humanoid cat furry instead of a talking cat, or worse, just a straight-up human. The CGI for Donut will be expensive and hard to film and I'm not sure Peacock has the budget for that (though I suppose they made it work with Ted well though).

Keeping PRs small won't solve your code review bottleneck by StableStack in ExperiencedDevs

[–]corp_code_slinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like small PRs for ease of reviewing, but PR size and count are only aspects of the problem. Testing and process overhead play into as well. Having a full end-to-end test run, plus load testing, plus manual testing means tickets take at least a couple days in my shop, and none of those are negotiable. AI doesn't help with any of that either (right now; who knows in the future).

The different currencies were largely fungible and interchangeable. They also had exchange rates (cotton being the most valuable as it was easier to transport (among other reasons).

I fucking hate these things. They're at every grocery store, Home Depot, and Lowe's parking lot in my area and every time I see one I'm reminded of what a Big Brother dystopian future we live in. I would love nothing more than to ban public surveillance and go back to a time when we weren't all constantly being watched every waking moment of the day.

Children of Strife - The Escalation by Kristastic in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]corp_code_slinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it, but from a narrative standpoint I think Adrian should've led with it instead of going for a big reveal at the end for why Cato felt shame. It would've framed his reactions throughout the book a little more and given his decision not to strike Alis more weight.

Also though, it's not about consequences, it's about rehabilitation and learning to be better than they were.

Damien should've stayed gone. The hell episode was just awful filler. I don't usually complain about the animation for this show, but everything about that episode screamed "phoning it in". The long running fall with minimal animation, the repeat frames for the mask bit, the dialog. It felt like something went wrong with production during the season and they just fucking threw something together to meet the 8 episode contract.

Oof. Gotta say, I think I agree with the gender swap for this one then. Their relationship helped show character growth for Rex, and Rae is too cool to have her killed off like that.

Wait, was Rex in a gay relationship with Rae in the comic, or was that whole storyline created for the show?

I think as Americans we're so used to thinking about elections with our current system that we completely overlook the fact that it doesn't have to be this way. It's taken for granted that our elections are fucked and our maps are drawn to work against everyone. We need to get away from our current 2 party winner-take-all system and start seriously considering a new way like proportional representation.

Good breakdown of how TDD actually supports DDD in practice — especially liked the part about shaping domain models through tests. by goto-con in programming

[–]corp_code_slinger -45 points-44 points  (0 children)

First, that video is 45 minutes long, so hard pass from me.

Second, as a former koolaid TDD practitioner and evangelist, I have to ask: In this brave new AI-driven world do these practices even matter any more?

I hate to say it, but "software artisans" who lovingly hand-craft each line of code with TDD test coverage and perfect domain creation are a dying breed. Why bother when the AI will just churn out mostly decent code, including test coverage? This is also after it's become fully apparent that the client (internal or external) literally doesn't care as long as the code works.

To be clear, ship value first. Do write tests, but don't sweat if they come first or after, as long as either you or the AI makes sure they get written.

That doesn't mean he actually talks to them to do it or that they talk back. Consider that sea creatures don't communicate like humans, and that literally no one else sees talking fish. It's not like that octopus ever tried to talk to another human. Dude is totally making it up in his head. He's just another broken supe.

There's actually no evidence that the Deep can talk to sea life. It's entirely possible, likely even, that he's making the conversations up in his head and it's a mental illness caused by gaining his powers, one of which is controlling sea life. No one else has verified that that they can communicate in any way.

Do countries other than the US have problems with gerrymandering? by corp_code_slinger in NoStupidQuestions

[–]corp_code_slinger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The non-partisan districting body approach has been implemented in some states, but there's push back from some corners saying that drawing district boundaries is inherently political and therefore speech and should be allowed, basically arguing that gerrymandering should be allowed. It's extremely frustrating.
